New Mouse Owner from MA
Hi,
I've never had mice before (well, except when I was too young to talk. I guess technically they were our first pets, but my mom gave them away quickly because they were too smelly).
I've had pet rats for many years. Recently the rat rescue group I get them from acquired a bunch of mice from a hoarding situation. So today I just picked up three does: Macy, Lola, and Hope.
What I've learned so far from poking around on the web is:
1. Mice are escape artists. Better to have them in tanks than cages. I have them in a 10 gallon tank with a screen cover, aspen shavings for bedding, and jammed full with things for them to climb on, hide in, etc.
2. Always have more than one if they are females.
I have to admit, my head is swimming with all I've been reading about diet, and I'm really confused. I still have to go get them something to eat (I put small pieces of Harlan 2018 in the meantime which is what I have for my rats). But I'll post in the diet and nutrition forum.

Re: New Mouse Owner from MA
Hi! I'm from western mass. It sounds like you have done quite a bit of research which is awesome.
All of my mice live on a daily diet of bread and lab blocks. I supplement feedings with seed/dog food when they are sick/underweight/breeding. Before I started breeding I had a pair of does who both lived over two years and they were only feed generic lab blocks from wal-mart. They never got sick or developed cancer so I am very pleased with these blocks and still use them as a base diet today. Do what you think is right for your girls, test out new things and see what they like more

The harlan block is perfect for them. They can eat the whole big blocks with no problem. I throw in a bit of puppychow and seed mix for treats or for nursing mothers, otherwise you are fine! Sounds like a good set up!
