I bought a brother and sister from a breeder in Sweden last time there was a show nearby, they were merely 5.5 weeks old and all black. A week or so later I noticed the girl having 2 tiny white spots on her belly and I figured it had something to do with her carrying pied (she did have some white toes) and that I hadn't examined her closely enough to notice when I bought her. But as time passed, the white spots started to spread over her belly in a splashed fashion and I can't figure out what it might be... The spots don't look anything like pied/broken, more like variegated, but then why are the spots developing over time? That is not a characteristic of variegated as far as I know, or is it?

Right now she is 3 months old and the splashes of white have even spread to her back while her brother remains all black.

I think it is kind of pretty, too bad most of the white is on her belly, but who knows how much more spots she'll develop over time tongue
But does anyone have an idea of what it might be? It's killing me not knowing LOL. I am planning on breeding her to find out if it passes on or if it's an existing variety. Too bad the breeder didn't give me any information on the lines (I was under the impression that it was a extreme black line). I tried contacting him for more info, but sadly he hasn't responded...

ae, I'm told, turns the tan hairs that are normally a fault around the ears and on the vent of a black mouse to white or clear. You could be looking at molt marks in combination with ae, but that is a really stunning effect! I'd totally select for that, if it's genetic. If it is molt marks, you might get more, fewer, or different ones next time she molts.

I talked to a breeder who apparently has the same thing pup up in her silvered line (si/si) and this girl can very well be one of her line's offspring (don't know for sure since the actual breeder hasn't responded).
She doesn't know what is causing it, but it might have something to do with silvered. She hasn't used them for breeding though, but she's going to try and contact a breeder who did try.
I'm excited and can't wait!

Anybody an expert on silvered?

Unfortunately I can't offer any help, but I have to say that those belly spots are simply lovely! I love the splashy look of them; too bad they are mostly on the underside. It's neat how they look a bit like variegated markings without the coat dilution and ticked-like appearance. It would be cool if they were heritable. I'm super curious to see if the spots continue to accumulate. Keep us posted on her development!

I will ^_^
I am starting to think that it is heritable, since it keeps popping up in someones lines Happy

I found an allele on the jax coat color page that discribes my girl, it is called freckled http://www.informatics.jax.org/wksilvers/frames/frame1-1.shtml
(chapter 6, section 4, E)

"Animals homozygous for freckled are viable and fertile and a whitish or cream color, though again uneven"

Sounds like it should be easy to test! If you don't have another one, you can breed her to anybody (since according to this she'd be heterozygous), but preferably self black. Keep the bucks, looking for one that's like her, and breed the two together. If you get the above described whitish/cream mice, more like them, and black selfs, that's your gene!

Or, ask if the breeder ever breeds them together and gets those weird beige/white mice.

Otherwise, it could be another allele very close to s. It would mean that crossing in s would have a deleterious effect, since this would only appear on S mice, barring crossovers.

That looks like merle, about. That's about the right age for merle to start developing too,and it starts on the belly.

Would be great if it were merle, we don't have that here at all tongue

The breeder with mice like this hasn't been able to breed them, multiple tries failed. But there is someone else who did succeed apparently, but I haven't been able to contact him. I was promised some pictures from the litter though.

I currently don't have a black buck that can breed available (I'm always short on black bucks, I swear I'm cursed!), so I will be using a blue one.

I actually have an other girl with a mutation (or fault) that looks very much like a merle spot ^_^

I think it is most likely a somatic mutation though, but I'm also breeding her to be sure...
