Short faced ASF

Post by Rhasputin on Wed Feb 15, 2012 6:42 pm

This is cross-posted from another forum, so I'm posting several messages in a row to update everyone here! tongue

Here's a photo of the short muzzle

When I compared it to another ASF from the same litter with a normal muzzle, the normal muzzle measured 1/2 inch from the corner of the eye to the nose, and the short one measure 1/8 inch shorter, and was clearly more broad. She also doesn't have a dip on her bottom jaw, where her 'chin' would be like most female ASFs do, she has a very masculine head, I'm excited to see her grow, and breed her. Happy

Update.

It's definitely a gene, the whole litter has it.
I was wondering if the rest of the litter had it, or if it was just my eyes playing trick on me, because the rest of the litter just doesn't have quite the same shortened face as this doe, so i couldn't -really- tell.

Just looked last night and one of her brothers has a CURVED face. His face is shortened on one side, and less so on the other, causing his snout to curve off to the left. Interesting stuff! Shocked

Don't think I'll be breeding the curved male, even though it's obvious he has the gene for sure. I'd rather not end up with curved faced babies.

I have seen this gene before. In Gambian pouched rats.
Here's a photo of a skull I owned, which had the same gene, or a similar gene.

Here are some updated photos. The first photo is of the one with the twisted face.

Here's the short faced doe from earlier, as she looks now

And here she is next to her less-short faced sister. Her sister's face is also shorter than normal, but it isn't as broad, so you can still see the difference even between them! The distance between her eyes and ears is shorter, as well as the distance between her eyes and nose.
