Where are all the Fawns?

Post by kawmice on Mon Feb 20, 2012 2:24 pm

I am having a VERY hard time hunting down a fawn mouse. Is there any way to create a fawn without actually having a fawn to start with?? I doubt it myself, but I just have to ask. I miss my fawn satins. Hissy fit

I've been considering getting a hold of RY, crossing them in with some of my mice that have Ay far down the line, then breeding in the p/p. Then just crossing those offspring together to darken pigment as much as possible. I think that's about as good as I'd be able to do without actually having fully Ay mice to indroduce the p/p to.

Fawns are my second favorite variety after Black Tans. This way that I've listed though, would be a slow process and I feel like taking it on at this time wouldn't be a good idea.

Ladies!
Explain to me, in detail, what the difference is between RY and fawn! Please!

My understanding is that fawn is essentially just pink eyed red. The p/p makes it more of an orange instead of a rich red in a really nicely pigmented Ay. I don't think it makes too much of a difference on your average pet store RY, but as Roland has shown with mixing his Ay and RY mice, the modifiers from Ay can help RY to deepen to a really pretty red shade. That's why I'd try seeing if I could boost the modifiers with what I have.

Thanks guys for all the great information! You are all very helpful. Happy unfortunately I do not have any Ay mice but I can definately aquire some. It will take some time though. Lol.

Question- if fawn is a pe red- could I use a red and pp mouse? Just a thought.

Fawn is generally Ay/ p/p or e/e p/p. Happy

Fawn - Bright, rich orange, with pink eyes.
Ay/* p/p or e/e p/p

If you like red and orange mice, you could also try for a gold!
They can be shown in pink and black eyes.

Gold - Bright vibrant yellow. Eyes may be pink or
black.
Ay/* or e/e

Thanks, I think we're the only US club (and possibly the only club world wide) to recognize a yellow coloured mouse as a standard. tongue

When we wrote the standards, it just seemed silly to have 4 categories for different types of orange, and no category for yellow!

It's not Ay Ann. Happy

But Ay mice can look yellow if bred 'poorly' (for red breeding) or away from red colour. Just the same as recessive yellow (which usually looks gold) can be bred to look deep red brown.

Both types of yellow can give a really wide range of shades; I'm curious about what causes the lighter shades; is there any set dilution factors that yield yellow instead of red or orange?

I have been waiting for over two months for Reds/Fawns, but my Red x Dove pair just won't breed for me! Ugh.

I wonder if Fawns could help the belly color of PE Tans.....

What makes a mouse yellow and not red is a lack of pheomelanin. The less a mouse has, the more gold or pale it's colouring, and the more a mouse has, the more red it becomes. Happy
