Available Soon-Sterling Silver or Brass cast charms!

Post by tinyhartmouseries on Thu Feb 23, 2012 12:47 am

I am hard at work on some rodent charms, to be available by mail anytime, worldwide, or at Rodentfest 2012! I am going to have a booth selling these at Rodentfest!

What I am making is lost-wax cast charms or figurines in either brass or sterling silver. The charms themselves are about the size of a nickel and are made with a really labor intensive process called lost-wax cast.
Basically, in lost-wax, a wax figure is first built. Then, a plaster mold is made around the wax, and the wax is melted out. Red hot metal is poured into the recess. The charm that is made should be an exact replica of the wax figure! From there, the charm can be polished, textured, patinaed...or the imagination runs wild!

I will have pictures in the next couple of days of the wax figures I have made so far. From there, I will need to know if anyone is interested, and in what, details, etc. I am hoping to help my husband and I with the 22 hour drive from Kansas to PA!

Here's what I am thinking...so far I have

1- show mouse
2- rat
3- long haired guinea pig
4- standard guinea pig
5- gerbil
6- (what are your ideas for Rodentfest? What else would be good?)

In sterling silver, I am thinking that cost of each will be $30, and in brass, $20. I would need to know preference of metal and if the piece is to be a charm (with attached ring) or a standalone figurine.

I can do custom of almost every animal at no additional cost, but details are limited on such a small scale!
I am very excited about my new process and about sharing my other love, art, with my mouse-keeping friends!

I may be interested in one or two. I just started making jewelry, so I'm on a jewelry finding spree!

What about hamsters?

Good idea about hamsters! Please keep checking the thread and I'll try to get some pics of the wax figures, even though they will be kinda ugly, it may help you get the idea! Laughing

Here are some pictures, keep in mind please that these are the uhgly wax burn out sculptures and NOT the finished product. The pics were the best I could do on short notice.. I am also going to be applying some texture. If anyone has any comments or specifications, please let me know over PM or on here.

They each sit on a nickel. Shown are the rat, gerbil, longhaired guinea pig, and two mice. I would appreciate any feedback!

How neat! Very nice Emma. I am neither artistic nor patient enough to do anything like that lol.

Well you folk just let me know if I can make you anything special. I take Paypal or Money order and can ship them world wide or bring them to Rodentfest.

I really appreciate the support, this is a huge project and I'm excited! Cheer

Do you have any silicone mold making material? I'd love to buy a mold from one of these guys, so I can cast them in resin. tongue

Rhas I am debating making a mold or not, but I think I can swing a half (flat?) mold pretty easily.

How well do you think I will do at Rodentfest, with the prices I mentioned?

Those are great! I love the angle of the "show mouse" in the lower right hand corner!
