What causes mice to fall over and die?

Post by pygmypuff on Wed Mar 07, 2012 12:49 am

I got some mice from the petsmart two weeks ago and last week, they started falling over and dying. What could have caused this? They had plenty of food and water, the males were alone and the females were in pairs. They were doing fine that morning, then BOOM they were dying all over. Cry

I had this happen all the time. Did they have lice or mites?
It could have just been that they were frail.

That's what I thought - that maybe it was anemia or low blood sugar.

They were fine that morning. No change in their eating habits or anything.

Sometimes it's called 'Sudden Mouse Death Syndrome', because there are so many un-seen ways that a mouse can just simply die, that there's nothing that we can do about it, and no way to really tell what happened. Sad

I would suggest getting healthier stock. Even they can have SMDS, but the rate it occurs is far, far, far lower due to inbreeding of healthy traits. Happy

Where do you live? Perhaps we know a breeder near you who can supply you with strong, healthy mice.

That would be best - get some mice from a breeder. Pet store mice, unfortunately are not the healthiest. Sad Again.... I am sooo sorry

Oh no! I remember those days- Sudden Rodent Death Syndrome. I had the same problem with Petsmart rats a LONG time ago. Good ol' Myco, temperature changes, diet changes... you name it... they'd just be gone. I think it happened with Petco mice too? It can happen with any rodent from any where really, but more so with pet store critters because of where they come from and how they were bred and raised. Sad
