Hello from Des Moines! :3 Empty Hello from Des Moines! :3

Post by Whurmy Wed Mar 14, 2012 1:34 am

Hi there! :3 You can call me Whurmy.

I'm seventeen and live in Des Moines. :3 I'm the very proud owner of a five year old Lhasa and a two year old domestic shorhair. :3 We also have a black tabby, but he's my mom's. Wink

I've been trying to convince my mom to let me get a new pet since around December, and we've finally come to an agreement! Big smile I take on all pet responsibilities, I get my new pet! Except, I can't get rats, which I really wanted. Sad It does suck, but she did say that mice will be alright, so I've been doing nothing but researching for like four days straight.

I'm not sure if I'm going to get a pair of girls or a lone buck, but whoever I get, they'll be living in either a converted storage bin, or a ten gallon tank. Not sure yet, as the converted storage bin may be a bit over my head. I don't have a soldering iron or anything, so cutting the hole in the lid could be pretty unsafe for me. And I nearly cut my finger off with a butter knife. ^^;

Anyways! :'D Just wanted to say hi and that I'm happy to be a part of this community and super excited to get my mice. Big smile

Also, if you're a breeder near Des Moines, shoot me a PM! :3 I'd love to take a couple babies off your hands, and I'll be a fantastic mice mom. Wink

Thank you! Big smile

Bahaha, I was like a week away from 15 when it happened to me, and I was trying to pry the pit out of a peach. :'DD Lord.

Definitely will! Big smile I'm hoping for black and white or black and brown piebald at the least, but I'd love a blue merle or tri color, too. Big smile

I love all the animal people stories about kids bringing home pets without their parent's permission. Obviously not exactly the best thing for a kid to do- especially if they aren't going to care for it. I was always frustrated by my parent's refusal to allow me to have an extraordinary number of pets (in the end, I think they taught me a good lesson on that one- a lot of pets equals A LOT of care and commitment and taking too much on is a very bad idea).

I was horrible about bringing things home without permission when I was younger though and my parents tolerated it very well. I would get the disapproval but then they always fell for the animal and decided I was doing a great job caring for it and could keep it. Happy

Some kids are more mature then others and can and will care for a pet.

A story Happy
I was the fish and reptile specialist at Petco in Colorado. There was this 11ish year old kid who woudl always come into the store. If she saw something she liked she would ask a TON of questions. Then over the corse of a week or two she would buy all the needed stuff she needed and eventually came for her new pet. I swear, that kid had every kind of reptile and smal critter there was! Her mom would just come into the store, sign the paperwork without even looking to see what her daughter was getting, and leave promptly after. Her mom told me the first day I mett them that her daughter can have any pet she wants. She stated that her daughter was very responsibe and took care of every single one of them by herself.

I thougt that was pretty cool. Happy She was a very smart girl and just bt talking to her I knew she was responsible so I allowed it.

I got my first parakeet before I went into kindergarden and she was my sole responsibility. So I was allowed a hamster when I asked and I had also always had hermit crabs. The mice my mom was afraid of. Rats were worse for her. To this day she has a fear of rats but with the help of some friendly mice and rats her viwes have changed. Unfortunately the fear is still there, but she is willing to hold one now. Happy

Oh, gosh. I wish I was that responsible when I was younger. Definitely woulda made my life much better. :') But oh my gosh, that girl sounds amazing. o.o

I did take good care of my hamster in elementary school, and the guinea pig I had a few years back, but the pair of hamsters in between those were mean. Upset I hardly paid them any attention.

I wish my mom could get over her fear of rats. Sad It'd make me much happier to have rats than mice, but I can just get my pair when I move out. :3

Whiiich is hopefully soon. :C

When I was 17 I brought a puppy home because I wanted a border collie super bad. Because we lived on the farm, I kept him in the barn, and it was four days before my parents found out. Looking back, I was lucky I got a good dog, but it was unfair of my to pick a dog without any input from my family. He is the first farm dog to have any sort of training, whether because I was the first person who had the time for it or because of the border collie in him.

Whurmy, congrats on figuring out that you shouldn't bring in any surprise pets! My mom hates rat's too (farm life!), but since they are mine at college she doesn't object too much if I bring them home because she want's me to visit and all. : D Has she ever actually handled any? I do demo's with my rat's, and the vast majority of the people walk over with their kids and stare. I convince the kids to feed them a cheerio, and the next thing you know, everyone is agreeing that the rat's aren't too bad. It's the tails that grosses ppl out a lot of the time. If you have any friends with super friendly rats, you should see about bringing them over and see if your mom will come around at the adorableness. Babies work better for this. Wink

Kawmice, that is such a cool story about working at Petco. I was a grooming assistant and dog trainer there awhile back and used to see some really responsible (and some not so responsible) children. I loved talking to the responsible kids who obviously really cared about their animal and wanted to do the best for them. Funny, it was always the parents of the responsible children that were most interested in how to care for the animal so it shows where the child gets it from.

When I was younger, my parents let me have responsibility in steps. I first got a Venus Flytrap and had it for quite awhile before it died. Then they let me get a hermit crab, also my responsibility (my mom cleaned the cage though). Then a hamster. Then a bird. I got a cockatiel when I was about eight or so. As it turns out, I'm not a huge fan of birds. I had her for a long time but just rehomed her this past year because I knew she wasn't getting the attention she deserved. She now lives with a client and friend of mine and they absolutely adore her. They've even taught her new words and I get photos all the time. It hurt to give up something I've had in my life for so long but I knew that, being a bird, she required a lot more attention than I was giving her and she deserved to live the rest of her life in a way that would most benefit her. In that sense, it took me a very long time to make that decision and I wish I had been mature enough for it when I was younger.

Thanks! Yea, I enjoyed talking to that kid as well. And especially being a reptile and fish specialist, I got hit with responsible people and not so responsible people. I refused to sell to so many. My store frowned upon selling an animal, even a fish, to an irresponsible home.
Y mom was really cool. I had birds, anoles, and hermit crabs at a very young age. I was always very responsible. I wasvshocked when she let me get my first hamster. she just was always against mice and especially rats. She had a bad experience. But now she is ok as long as I hold them. I don't live with her and that makes it easier. Though she has helped me catch escapees in the past.
