I think that looks like a roan. There wouldn't be any way to tell for sure if it's a roan-like merle without breeding him or her and seeing if they throw any merle, at least according to everything I've heard. Where did you recieve him? Any chance you could ask or observe other related mice?

Re: Can anyone ID this mouse?
I was thinking he's a roan.
There was a guy who just gave him to me. I'm unsure where he got him from though :-/
He had adopted one of my mice and found out he had to move, so he gave me my mice back, as well as all his other mice rats and cages. *shrug*
I suppose some experimental breeding should be planned for the future Fine by me

That's a luck break that you got them back. I have a return contract for all my mice but sometimes I wonder if it was followed in every case. I hope so.

I've sold only to a few people, and they actually keep in touch with me, one buys food from one, the other was the guy who returned them all, and the other people are on ML.
Hopefully in the future I have the same luck. It's hard to enforce contracts. You never quite know what people are doing. :-/
Ann, I don't think he has any other darker patches except that one darker stripe down his nose, but it's not solid black, it's darker gray.

Re: Can anyone ID this mouse?
Looks like roan or roan-like. Probably not a dominant roan though... no one seems to have those. Test breed to merle carrier, if you get merle/roan-like in the litter resulting from that it is a roan-like. Or if you have no merle carrier test breed to a self, if you get ANY roans it is dominant type roan, if not, breed a baby back to it to confirm you get roan-like/merles in that litter.
The slightly darker stripe down the nose is normal on my merles and roan-likes because sometimes there are small areas that still have white intermingled but it is to a lesser degree than the rest of the body.

Re: Can anyone ID this mouse?
I would bet pretty much any amount of money that that is a recessive "roan-like" merle. It is darker on its head...even if its not a solid spot, a dominant merle wouldn't have that.

Hmm......... he could have the merle gene being that he has that darker head spot. Otherwise I would say Roan.
