Easter rabbits Empty Easter rabbits

Post by Rhasputin Thu Mar 15, 2012 10:38 am

It's that time of year again. When pet shops and feed stores stock tons of rabbits for parents to buy for their children as 'cute easter presents' Concerned

If anyone has room for rabbits, or knows someone who does, keep an eye out in the local paper and on craigslist for free rabbits to good homes, because a LOT of these rabbits will get abandoned after a very short time, or neglected by the child. People don't realize when they buy the rabbit it's just as much work, or more, as a dog, and is not just a cute accessory to Easter, but is a living being.

I'm already grabbing up some rabbits for myself!

I sure wish I had the space. I haven't ever had rabbits but they seem like a lot of fun. I hate that people thinks pets are so disposable.

I always feel bad for those rabbits who get dumped when no one wants to care for them. I also feel bad for all the chicks that get sold at that time of year too.

Last year my sister's BF gave her 2 baby ducks for Easter. I love ducks but I wanted to smack him for buying them! I'm sure the "breeder" will be cranking out the baby ducks, chicks and bunnies again this year!

I've wanted a dwarf bun for a while. But I'd want a safer yard for her to run around in the playpen. Sad

Every year I take in unwanted, rabbits, chicks & ducklings.
Luckily the feedstores near me are cracking down this year.
You have to buy at least 6 chicks & duckings etc and have to prove that you have everything needed to care for them.

I really wish breeders wouldnt sell rabbits for easter Sad

Breeders don't sell rabbits for easter, at least not good breeders, most breeders like myself won't even sell rabbits as pets anymore. Most of the rabbits you see are from people out to make a quick buck, they purchase poor quailty stock, and cross them with no regard for the health, temperament or breed standard.

A lot of commercial breeders, breeders who raise rabbits for meat production, also sell their young rabbits to feed stores/pet shops this time of year as they get more per head for a younger animal that costs them less to raise. Since they look small and cute and are generally very hardy people buy them, these rabbits however mature into large muscular adults who make difficult pets for the beginner. Most commercial breeds are also very tempermental and prone to territorialism[especially the does]. In addition to all their other short comings as pets, they have an extremely high metabolism, and due to that generally have a shorter lifespan than your average fancy breed.

A long time ago I took in rescues, mostly rejects from easter and the like. However after a few years I realized not one of the rabbits I was taking in were actually from breeders like myself. So basically I was going out of my way, spending my time and and money to cover up the mess that money hungry bad breeders were making. Not to mention that most of the rabbits had snuffles or were non-symptomatic carriers and were unsafe to rehome and had to be euthanized.

In high school, one of my teachers got his daughters two little Easter chickens. I was "the Chicken Lady" so they ended up becoming mine. It was one of those things that kinda irritated me, I assumed that the people who buy the rabbits, ducks, chickens as unthought Holiday present are somewhat daft, and to have a teacher buy in somewhat surprised me. I got free chickens, and he took good care of them, but I know that a lot of the people who get them don't know jack, and the poor birds end up dieing or getting squished by kids. : /

I already saw an easter bunny add on CL. :C
I so wish I could take her in, she's precious. There's no toys in her cage and while I can't really tell, I don't think there's any hay either. Sad

Thats not how it is here. Theres even some well known breeders in te area that breed for "Easter Litters" It would suprise you the amount of breeders that actually breed and sell for Easter.
I asked one breeder a few years ago, why and she told me becouse during Easter she makes more in rabbits then she does the rest of the year combined.
Last year I had someone bring me baby chicks that had shoe string tied on their feet and some even around their necks. The kid tied them up becouse he didnt know what else to do with them.
