Green poop

Post by inkeduptara on Thu Mar 15, 2012 4:59 pm

So, I was having tub time with the girls, and noticed Tesla, the orange girl pooped green poop. Knowing chins can get giardia and it smells, I smelled it. It did have an odd odor, normal or no? I dont notice it all over the cage, so I wasnt sure if it was because tub time was new to her, and I had to pick her up or if this isnt normal. No one else has it, but I would like to avoid it if it is contagious to them. She seems fine otherwise.

Hi. These are my guesses until someone with more experience or knowledge shows up. If it is solid as opposed to diarrhea google answers to similar questions say it is less worrisome. Many recommend cooked rice to help get the digestion back on track. Personally, if the stool was loose over time or if there were other odd behaviors I'd go to the Vet. Dehydration risk and all. Hope this is a start until someone else jumps in.

It was soft but not runny. If I were talking about a chin, I would just say GI upset and if not clear tomorow, then a vet visit. However, my chins are house alone, and no cross contamination between cage mates can happen. Thank you for your reply. I did see cooked rice was a good option, I may just do that now, to see if it helps. Cant hurt, I would imagine.

Right now ecotrition but my friend is ordering the food that was recommended on the forums. Just hadn't gotten it from the distributor yet. She gets it wholesale. I don't give treats. My food is 16% protein. The one I'm using.

If it continues, it can be a problem. But it could just be a one-time-thing and in that case it's fine. Maybe they ate more of one thing than usual, or were a bit stressed, or any number of things.

I mean. . . not to be gross but. . . You don't always poo the same colour all the time either I'm sure.

Lmao!!! You are right I don't!!!! Lololol

I just wanted to make sure. Giardia is bad for chins so I was worried if I missed it she could be suffering or something. Glad I asked lol thanks for the laugh.

Also, ecotrition has colored bits of food in I believe. That might also be contributing to the color of her poop. Lol.

My nephew had a hamster who was pooping red. They call me and I realized it was the coloring in his favorite tibits in the hamster food. He lived a long happy life.

Another explanation of green poop--and this applies to humans, as well--is that it passed through the colon too quickly to be fully processed.
