rawhide in bulk?
Hey guys! I have three big dogs plus I buy for my mom's big dog as well. Does anyone know of a website where I can get rawhide chips in bulk?
Re: rawhide in bulk?
Can't help you...I won't give rawhide to my dogs. Foster is the only of our 4 that has ever gotten rawhide...he got it until I realized that after he ate it....it made him pee a LOT more than normal...
My guys love antler chews though! ...if you've never tried them, www.antlerchews.com has FANTASTIC prices on them. Moose is longest lasting, elk second...our dogs prefer elk. The "deer" (whitetail) ones didn't seem to last very long for our guys.

I don't give my dogs rawhide either, however they love bully sticks, which last a lot longer than rawhide and are a lot safer.

Bully sticks and antlers are great. You can get antler by the pound from a lot of sites. I think it's usually about $20 per lb. Bully sticks are made form beef tendons, so they can be digested fully, which seems to be an issue with rawhide sometimes.

The antler chews from www.antlerchews.com are generally less than $20/lb. They are the absolute cheapest I could find anywhere. The super jumbo elk antlers from www.antlerchews.com weigh over 1 1/4 lbs each for $16.99 and he ships using priority flat rate packaging (the envelopes if he can fit them in)....so shipping is generally only $5-6 too. A 3 pack of jumbo elk chews is $26.99...that's about $9 each....and they are good size pieces of antler! A few times I've hunted around for prices and he is always cheapest and the pieces are of good quality (some vendors will sell you old/weathered/cracked/splinterable chews).

Really? Antlers??? Never thought they could be edible.
Kaiya was always good with rawhide but Ace never was so I rarely ever gave it to them. Chewy needs something to keep him busy in his kennel when I am at work. So they get rawhide then. Ace has Gorton better with them as well.
How long do the antlers last roughlyin your opinion? Do bully sticks last?

Re: rawhide in bulk?
The bully sticks usually only last my big dogs a few good hours - and they are very aggressive chewers. They will not last as long as the antlers but may have more of a "taste" than the antlers. They are somewhat expensive. The best price I've found is http://www.bestbullysticks.com/. Of course, the more you buy the less expensive each individual bully is.
Re: rawhide in bulk?
Thanks!! I looked at the antlers and I may prefer the bully sticks. If they last a few hours I will be happy. I'll check them out now! I am stuck at work till my ipod charges a bit. I do not want to travel home for the next 2 hours with no music. lol
Re: rawhide in bulk?
Our (elk) antlers have lasted FOREVER....We have one piece that's at least a year old and the dogs still like to chew it. Some dogs don't like it...my parents' doesn't, but ours like them a lot and will sit and chew them for a long time. Antler is bone....but it is a different density from regular bone and it is not cooked at all. we do also give raw bones....but the antler lasts a lot longer and isn't gross...lol...and they prefer them over time....once the marrow is gone from a regular bone, they mostly lose interest...they don't lose interest in the antler pieces. They may get bored of one on occasion, but they will back to them again and again!
My aussie/heeler cross, Foster, DESTROYS rawhide/bully sticks/anything even moderately "soft"..........he could finish a large rawhide bone in about 15 min......he eats a whole turkey neck in about 2 min....A good piece of antler takes him a long time to do any significant damage too.

You can rub flavor onto the antlers every now and then to keep your dogs interested. They sell dog treat 'stuffing' in a can like squeezey cheese, and you can put a little on the antler to get them interested in it again if they lose interest.

Re: rawhide in bulk?
And good idea on the squeezy treat idea Casey. Lol you're refering to the kong stuffers right? The canned stuff

Re: rawhide in bulk?
lol....foster is my only really heavy chewer...but he just decimates stuff...lol He'd have a rawhide chip gone in like a minute....literally...lol When I gave him rawhide I HAD to get him the compressed stuff b/c everything else was gone in no time......even the compressed bones he'd finish really fast though. The ONLY things I've been able to find that really last for him is the antlers and nylabones (though he kills the puppy ones and the softer ones). Also giving him frozen raw bones and the like. You could also try freezing canned dog food into a kong...which definitely works for a lot of dogs, not for my foster though...lol I swear his tongue is prehensile.....I don't know how he does it...but even with frozen solid food inside a kong he will manage to get all of it out within 10-15 min....lol

Re: rawhide in bulk?
Oh another thing I've found that is just AWESOME is the Busy Buddy Kibble Nibble dog toy....
http://www.petsupplies.com/item/busy-buddy-kibble-nibble-dog-toy/494496/
...some dogs might destroy it....but foster hasn't done it any damage and it works like a charm! Even with foster the wonder dog kicking it around his cage like a soccer ball it takes him hours to get all the food out! It also makes them work for thier dinner The only issue I've had with it is that every once in a while it will come unscrewed and let them in...but the dogs haven't done any damage to the toy as of yet.
