Kaytee Clean and Cozy Bedding

Don't be taken in like I was by this stuff. It's cheaper than Carefresh for a reason!

I decided to give it a try because I figured the mice might like it. It's softer than Carefresh and the bits in the bag are more uniform. It basically looks like shredded toilet paper... and well, that's about how well it performs.

On Thursday I did a 100% change on my girl's 20 gallon tank. There are 4 girls in it. I can usually go at least a week if not more with only spot cleans on Carefresh or paper crumbles. This stuff already smells kind of "bathroomy". Not an ammonia smell but definitely dirty and mousey.

The mice don't seem to like it any better or dislike it any worse, so now I have a whole bag of this stuff I need to use it up Laughing Which I guess I will be doing pretty quickly as I do partial changes on their cages much more often... Eye roll

This is why I mix bedding. Carefresh is nice and absorbant but aspen controls odor (and is cheaper to replace). And then I add hay for good measure Happy no smell!

They make Carefresh with baking soda now? Saw it at Petsmart a few days back.
No idea how safe baking soda is around mice, but it seems ingenious. I'll probably ask around a bit, but I'd like to try it when I get my mice. :3

But I have heard nothing good about Kaytee bedding. :C

I'm hesitant to use any wood chips. I had aspen chips at first in the tank when I just had the one mouse, but she was sniffling in there a lot, so I switched to paper and she stopped sniffling. And yes, the hay helps Big smile But I don't like this stuff at all. It's really no better than just filling the tank with shredded TP.

wow - I will definately stay away from that bedding then. I have in the past used shredded paper, but it does nothing for the smell in my opinion. But it is safe! lol
