Squeaking and food-stealing... normal?

Post by snukb on Wed Mar 28, 2012 8:39 pm

I know food-stealing is normal... but I was wondering if squeaking is a normal response for the thief's "victim" to have?

It seems to be mostly one mouse stealing the "good stuff" away from the smaller mice. And that one mouse is getting pretty round. When she approaches one of the babies to grab the food they start squeaking a lot and try to run away.

It's not like they're not getting enough to eat... everyone looks well-fed and happy. They all sleep together, groom each other, etc, but is this something to be concerned about? Is it just because the babies are young and smaller than her? They're about eight weeks old, and Monet (the fatty) is maybe five months.

I'd put it off to them just communicating. My mice get into squeaking arguments quite frequently but there's never any bloodshed. Most of the time somebody is chasing another away from the food bowl. They used to keep me up all night with what I call "mousey fight club" but I've learned to ignore it and let it be.

Your two younger girls have a squeaky mom. It could be somewhat of a nature/nurture issue. Even her son is quite talkative and chatters to himself while he's in the cage or in my hand. All of them chattered while I was holding them when they were younger. I think they just happen to be very vocal mice.

Some mice are just more vocal. Also, the babies are probably just being submissive to the older mouse. I would not worry unless there is fighting going on. Happy

That's what I thought. It does make me feel better to hear it though, and to hear they had squeaky momma. lol. I see food fights all the time in the mouse tank at work (like when I "accidentally" cut up too much strawberry for the tortoises and well I can't throw it out so in the mouse tanks it goes... lol) but there's never any squeaking involved.

Monet is just getting so fat!! She needs to stop stealing and start running some more. tongue SHe had me double checking everyone's butts that's how fat she's getting. lol
