I have bad news... Mice I had just adopted out recently, well one mouse, is sick w a cold I use to have in the mousery, it seems I still never got rid of it, it came from another breeders mousery that had closed down and I believe she knew they were sick although she had denied it. The mouse I adopted out wasn't showing any signs here but is there now w a crusty closed eye. We at our mousery culled everyone that ever showed signs. I'm just concerned about adopting mice out to you all if they could possibly get sick in the future, if you do not want to adopt the mice from me now I understand, Jay and I are going to retire from breeding for at least a few months to sort this out and then only breed once or so a year. I'm sorry for the trouble, I just wouldn't want to adopt out mice that could be possibly sick and infect others mice.

Thank you for alerting me of this situation. Since these mice I am getting are going to start my mousery, I am sadly going to not take the mice. I am getting some others from other breeders and I just can't take a chance. Hope things work out. Robin

I usually give all new mice a low dose baytril after an event anyway and have strict QT so I will probably still take mine. It all depends. Still need to pm you! Lol will discus things futher via pm.

Kawmice, do you do it to healthy and sick mice and is very likely to work? Because I would definitely take mine still if I had that option.. I have access to Baytril via my vet.

I completely understand, I would feel the same way, I was unforunate to not be advised how sick the mice were that were adopted to me and I know how hard it can be. You can buy baytril from ladygouliganfinch.com i might have spelled that wrong though! If you google it will come up, mice get .2 cc in a 4oz bottle of water, .4cc in a 8oz bottle of water, it works really good.

I use less then that actually, but it depends on how sick the mice are. I try to use the smallest amount possible. It is very effective! Oh- doses also depend on concentration.

Thanks for the link! I did not know about that one. I get mine at work since I work at a vet. Lol

mice

Post by onceuponamousery on Thu Apr 05, 2012 1:50 am

Also just wanted to inform everyone we have adopted out several mice every month and out of the 100 we have right now none are showing signs of sickness. All together there has been 3 ppl that had gotten mice from us that later on gotten sick. I'm not sure why they do not show signs here and then do after they leave even sometimes awhile after they left us? We have adopted to around 20 ppl the past yr, 3 had mice that got sick. I understand if no one is interested I just wanted to clarify the situation a little better.

Re: List of adoptable and reserved mice

Almost forgot to answer your other question -

I tend to use a very low dose of baytril before and after an event. The last few years I have been lax about using it before an event, but I do give more vitamins then usual to boost their immune systems. Even if a mouse is healthy, stress can change that in a second. Same with people. Stress can make you sick or bring about anything that may be "hiding." It lowers your immune system, which is not what we want. An event such as a show or rodent fest can be hard on a mouse and cause stress. Due to this and the fact that their are so many animals at fest, I use a one time small dose of baytril just to give them a boost. I have never had a problem with sterility and have never had a problem with my animals after an event.

Another important factor is QT. Any mouse that come into a home with existing mice (rats, gerbils, hamsters, ect) should go through at least a 3 week QT period. I have a strick QT at my mousery. This will protect your existing colony from any outside illnesses. Some illness cannot be seen until the mouse gets stressed and starts showing signs. They lay dormant until an outside factor (stress) causes it to "wake up". Get what I am saying? Happy

Remember, you run the risk of getting your existing animals sick everytime you introduce a new animal into your house. If proper QT procedures and other precautions are taken all should be well.

Is there any risk of disease moving from my mice to my guinea pigs? They are housed near each other and the easier ones to move away from everything is the two mice I currently have so I would just QT in the normal mouse location.

Regina - those 3 mice may just have gotten very stressed and gotten sick due to that factor alone. Do not blame yourself. Having a few mice get sick does not mean your whole colony is sick or you are a bad breeder. Stress can get people sick as well....... I am not worried about the mice at all. Happy I am definately still going to take mine. Happy

there are a very few illnesses that can transfer from a mouse to a guinea pig, but they are so limited!! One is ringworm and that is pretty rare in mice, though it can happen. A regular cold or URI from a mouse cannot be transfered to a g. pig. You should be just fine! Happy
