Obesity's effect on fertility? Empty Obesity's effect on fertility?

Post by thesilverspoon Tue Apr 10, 2012 2:47 pm

Hey there,
I have a young satin piebald brindle doe, who is no more than 5 months old, and already very chubby.
I've heard that her obesity may impact her fertility and ability to even become pregnant, but I would also like to know if it would be dangerous for her to carry a litter when she already looks like she's pregnant haha. I just can't imagine how round she would be.

Also, do obese bucks have difficulty breeding?

I'd love to hear your input/ any experience with the issue (especially those who have bred brindles, since they're so prone to it)

Thanks guys!

Generally the problem is that obese mice of either gender become so fat that their genitals can't reach far enough to connect! I have had lots of obese mice become pregnant. We ought to start a thread for obese pregnant mice!

Haha!!

Yea..... I actually have a buck right now who I am a bit worried about. I plan on breeding him but at only 3.5 months old he is getting quite large. With mice that are obese I like to include a wheel in their cage most definately. It helps to a point. lol Helps certain mice who like to use it I should add.

Alas, the buck only wants to use his wheel as a toilet, and the doe doesn't understand the concept and how it could possibly be "fun". Saucers were a no-go with them as well, and mousey diets failed.

Maybe they'll just burn some calories attempting to breed... tongue

I have several ginormous mice who unfortunately have genetic contributions from my old Champage Tan project in their pedigree. They are very fat and the does look pregnant constantly. None of them have bred for me, though I've only tried to use them for test breedings since I know what they carry and they are very sweet girls I had hoped to use as nannies. Laughing

I also have a fat, Red buck who still hasn't bred either. He's living alone now, fed on lab block. I will give him a young lady after RF when hopefully he is sufficiently tired of being lonesome and eating only lab block. Laughing

The biggest problem with fat bucks trying to breed is the fact that the ladies can out run them and eventually they give up or get distracted with a yummy treat they discovered during the chase!

Well I currently have an equally chubby couple together, so I don't think anyone is doing any running. Wish they would, then I wouldn't have this problem tongue
