What is the illness?
The mice that have ever gotten sick with us came down with crusty or red eyes, sneezing and became lethargic. I had gotten them from another mousery, i culled the really bad ones, qt'd and treated with baytril but some must have harbored it. I'm just curious if anyone knows what specific illness this could be? I'm not going to breed for a few months and treat the mice we have now, if any show any signs I will cull them. I want our mice to be healthy as can be. Does anyone have any advice? If after months a sick mouse still pops up etc then we wont adopt mice out or start over with new mice. I had gotten a sick rat from Rf last year too, so please be careful of what you get from there, I'm pretty sure they share illnesses and the rat could even be partly to blame to what is going on. I got a sick rat from another breeder t0o, we know they were sick because on the way home they had started sneezing We have had some very bad luck with getting sick mice and rats from breeders sadly, that was why I wanted to be upfront about ours, even though it was only one sick mouse I just didn't want to not let everyone know.
Re: What is the illness?
I just checked every mouse in the mousery and not one is showing any signs, should I still treat them, does anyone have any advice?
Re: What is the illness?
My mouse has had the same issue. We have had her for a while, so I'm not sure how she got it and the new mice we go were not sick and it was a good 2 months after. kawmice has been helping me with her by giving me advice. I also have a post with pictures on her, her eye is also bad, just like you said. And now it looks like some of her fur is missing too.
I would treat her, I'm on day 2 of treating Snowball for 10 days.

Re: What is the illness?
Thank you LittleSniffs. We hardly ever had any sick mice for the past yr, just a few had popped up which is weird. I think it's mice that do not have a strong immune system.
We aren't going to breed for a few months and put them on a low dose of baytril along w that vitamin supplement. A breeder said not breeding for a few months would most likely get any illness out of the mousery and I think that makes alot of sense because the 2 that were sick were young. That also would help for us to be confident about our mice being healthy which is best for everyone. We will have texels, himis, pews, satin brokens, brindles, splashed and a few other possible variations with the studs that we are keeping in about 7 months give or take. We are sorry for the trouble with the reservations and will not be adopting out mice that were on the list at this time just to be safe other than Lycrissa's who's mice were kept separate. Thank you and I'm sorry if I came off rude at all, I've been very grumpy dealing with my first pregnancy, stomach flu and now a uti! Hopefully the baby shall be healthy and we will have a little girl or boy this September, then all this will be well worth it

Re: What is the illness?
She is lossing hair now?? grrrrrr............ wow.......
hmm......... Littlesniffs - PM me - I would like to know what you are feeding them and also - do you know how old she is?? I think she may be developing a food allergy on top of everything else. I hope that is what the hair loss is from. Can you maybe send me a pic? kaworldnet@yahoo.com
Regina - sometimes you do get a mouse who just keeps getting sick. It is normal to get the ocasional sneezing or other mouse in a mousey with multiple mice. The best thing to do is treat the mice and go from there. It can be a pain.
Now.... If mice constantly are getting sick, then you have a problem. Then you wonder if you don't have an underlying and ongoing illness.
I truly believe the weather is contributing to alot of issues lately. It was a very weird and crazy winter (if I should call it a winter) and even now..... very weird weather. Even my cats broke out with allergy flairups - in the middle of winter! Cost me $500 in one week! I personally know breeders who have lost full colonies to extreame weather.

Re: What is the illness?
my moms dog had redness in her ears her nipples were beet red and she scratched her neck raw in 24 hours. never showed any signs of allergies before. she was miserable. doc put her on steriods and other stuff. she is doing sooo much better. yeah i believe weather is the culprit too.

Re: What is the illness?
Hey the person that adopted the young mouse that had the eye issue said she took the mouse to the vet and they gave her drops for its eyes and it has helped everything plus the sneezing, I emailed her to see if she can let me know what medicine they gave her, I'm really curious. Since I don't know for sure I just think waiting a few months to observe them is a good plan, it's better since I'm preggo anyways lol
Little sniffs losing hair could be allergies like kawmice said, I think there are other things that cause that too but I don't know mouse illnesses well, I need to learn more about them! I hope the mouse gets better soon. Double check to make sure it's not mites, the diamactious earth worked for me in the past and since never had a issue w mites again

It looks like it to me, I just took pictures of both eyes since the other is fine. We put eye drops for allergies in last night and just a bit ago and it looks a lot better then it did. I will email you the pictures tomorrow.
Thanks again!!!

Yea it does make sense now that she said it. It's just weird it popped up, like you said out of no where. It's been a good month now for her being sick.
As far as mites, can you describe them for me? I will check her over tomorrow. I check on her 2 to 3 times a day. She's eating like crazy so I make sure fresh food is in her cage 2 times, vs 1 for the others.

Re: What is the illness?
Hey,
Yeah the mites are hard to see, they are really tiny little red dots, if its bad you can normally see them in their bedding where they sleep, but if she is the only one I think that would be weird, so probably not mites, they are really contagious.

Re: What is the illness?
AHh ok, she's been in her own cage away from the others for about 6 weeks. But I'm still going to check her tonight when we do the eye drops.
Thanks :-)
Thanks :-)

Re: What is the illness?
Mouse mites are black or brown. The only kind I have seen anyway. lol Red mites are more for reptiles if I remember correctly. It varies by species of mite. Just take your finger and rub/pet themouse from tail to head. See anything small and moving, she has mites!
A few of my cats suffer from allergies. It gets bad. They get sick, itchy, red, and swollen. I have two on special diets they have it so bad.

Re: What is the illness?
Really?! That's weird because we had mites in the beginning that we would treat and kept coming back and then finally went away but they were always little red dots.
Re: What is the illness?
hmm....... must have been a different species then what I have dealt with. There are different species of mites and different areas can get different species. ...............hold that thought..... be right back..........
ok...

http://www.paw-talk.net/forums/f16/mites-58715.html - the red lumps, wounds are the bites from the mites in these pics
Mite feces is red small dots that do not move around. Mite and flea feces are digested blood and when wet will turn blood red again.

Re: What is the illness?
No they were red little dots that moved! They even got onto the walls, the revolution and ivermectin didn't work, the diamoctous earth did though, once and for all! They looked the same as those tiny red dots you see outside sometimes.
Re: What is the illness?
Oh I am not saying you were wrong. I was just exlaining what the most common and the ones I have seen look like. Sorry if you took that the wrong way. Lol
Like I said on my previous post- there are many different species of mites and different geographical locations can get different species of mites.
I am glad I did not have the same species you had! Revolution works on the black/ brown guys just fine . Lol

Re: What is the illness?
I have never seen red mouse mites so I have no clue what species they are but I will look into it. Lol
Re: What is the illness?
Yeah they look the same I guess as the kind out side and the kind on reptiles. I remember my brother bringing in a log from outside for his reptile that got the same looking mites, yrs ago.
Re: What is the illness?
She was checked and didn't have any.
Kawmice, the kid and I have been sick, I'll try to get those pictures to ya! I haven't forgot!
