Hello from NYC!

Post by mochaluca on Sun Apr 08, 2012 11:12 pm

My name is Luca and I'm a rodent fanatic residing in Brooklyn, NY! I'm 17 and about to head off into a college.
I was refraining from getting a pet since I thought I will be going away for college, but I ended up loving the city college and decided to stay in NY! Which means I can get a pet without fearing leaving it behind in the undependable care of my parents. I used to own gerbils, a fancy mouse, and hamsters, and currently I'm looking for young but weaned fancy mice. I got here while looking for any good mice breeders in NY since I refuse to buy any mice from a pet store(unless it's adoption...). This place seemed like a good start for me if I want to look for a sweet new mouse. Happy

I hope we get along! ('u')//

PS-Feel free to PM me if you are a mice breeder in NYC! Big smile

If you're ever in jersey....look for Kinchley's, Nellie's, or Chimney Rock. Best freakin pizza in the world. period. Cracker thin crispy crust, sweet sauce...deliciousness....warning though....you WOULD eat half a pizza before you even realized what happened....lol

@kawmice-Thanks! True, the east coast is sparse when it comes to mice breeders. Wait, if you're a breeder, do you have any weaned hoppers you can sell to me? I never tried dominos pizza since I usually order from local pizzarias. Is it any good?

If its a hopper its not weaned. No reputable or responsible breeder would rehome a mouse under 4 weeks of age.

Oh, I'm sorry! I thought a hopper is 3-5 weeks.
Then a . . . young adult? Is that the right term?

A "hopper" is between the eyes opening and weaning...that is 2-4 weeks. Hopper is also a term generally used by reptile people selling feeders....though on occasion you may hear us use "hopper stage" as some youngsters do get a bit jumpy during that period. You'd best serve yourself by avoiding the reptile food terms Wink

When looking for mice...just say you are looking for mice...you don't need to give an age....when people are looking for pets its generally assumed they want youngsters and that is what most people who sell for pets have to sell anyway. If someone offers you something older, politely decline.

Why are you looking for so young anyway? Mice are best rehomed after they are least 5 weeks of age...and they don't look much different from an adult besides size at that point anyway.

Oh gosh, thanks for the advice! My brother will probably be laughing if he read this right now. I'm still new to the mice thing, since I'm usually a hamster person. When I was googling a mice age chart so I can refer to them properly (which ended up a worse thing), and the age chart came up referring to baby mice as pinkies-->fuzzy-->hopper-->subadult and such.
I like to get them young since I can see how they develop into mature adults. My father also says that 'the younger they are, the longer they'll live in your presence', which is true I guess. I got my hamster when she was 2 months old and she still have a lot of growing to do. It was really cool to see how she barely filled one of my hands when I first got her, and by her 3rd year she filled both hands. She found my right hand comfortable and often slept in it. She didn't like my left hand for some reason...

Mice, like hamsters, even at 2 months still have a lot of growing to do Wink Health and friendliness should be more important than age when its a matter of a month or so.

pinkies-->fuzzy-->hopper-->subadult
That is the "correct" order...you just had the ages wrong... pinkies are up until fur grows, fuzzies are up until eyes open, hoppers are after eyes open to weaning (mice can be jumpy once their eyes open...leading to the term hopper...but they tend to natural settle by the the time they wean), some will call mice just after weaning weanlings...but again, when asking breeders for pets, your best bet would be to just ask for mice that are friendly, healthy, and if you want to say "young" you can...but using terms like "hopper" and asking for a specific age and such will make breeders a bit skeptical of you.

Ohhhh, okay!
But I might not even be able to use your advice if I can't find a breeder to get my sweeties from Cry And I absolutely refuse to buy from PETCO or Petsmart since they always abuse their animals. There were a few white mice that Sean Casey Animal Rescue has but my dad wants specific fancy mice like satin mice. Sometimes I wonder if the mice will be my pet or his, haha.

Stina is right 100% I couldn't have said all that better if I tried. Lol

I do not like to adopt my mice out until they are at least 5 weeks old. And never under 4 weeks. I require all new adopters to fill out an adoption application as well. I will Be more then happy to help as long as you fill one out and we get to know one another a bit better. Lol. Unfortunately though- I do not have any available currently. Maybe in 3-4 months I should have plenty if all goes well. Feel free to pm or email me. Happy
