How to handle foot bleeding

Post by LittleSniffs on Fri Apr 13, 2012 2:37 pm

One of my boys got out and went after another male mouse. I'm sure it's his left foot that is bleeding, I finally got a good view of it once I put him in his cage. It's been bleeding for about a hr or so now.

Is there anything I can do for him? Or should I just let it go?

Well I would make sure his only substrate is papertowels, keep him super clean and make sure to wash off the foot if you can.
I am not sure their is much else you can do. Any medication you put on him he would lick right off.

He'll almost certainly be alright. Just like Tara said, give him paper bedding, and make sure it doesn't get infected, and he should take care of the rest.

It's very rare for a mouse to bleed to death, in my experience. I've had ASFs (not mice, but close) that have ripped each other to pieces, and survived just fine.

I would recomend you first of all keep a very good eye on him. Mice do not have a lot of blood that they could lose. I would recomend taking him to a vet if still bleeding in half an hour or so. It may need to be stitched up. Don't use neosporin because it could be toxic if enough is ingested and do not use perioxide on an open wound. SSD cream is best but must be prescribed by a vet. He could also get a serious infection from the bite. oh- a moistened tea bag may help stop the bleeding. I almost forgot about that! Tricky part is holding it on his wound.

Poor baby. Sad

Edit- just like Casey said- I never had a mouse bleed to death either but it can happen. I have seen it happen in rats- but they were ripped open and my friend just left them or just got to them to late. Remember- I am just speaking from a medical standpoint. Lol

If the wound is small I've stopped bleeding with flour. Just dust the wound to help clot it. The trick is to try and keep the mouse calm so they don't realize you've done something or they'll lick at it and probably make it worse.
