Is this bub a gremlin mouse? *UPDATED 5/18*

Post by Love2read on Wed Apr 18, 2012 1:17 am

I have a new litter and the bub seems to have 1 ear that's dumbo... I recall seeing a pic of a mouse like that once before and I believe it was called "Gremlin".

Is anyone familiar with Gremlin mice?

What do you think, is this a Gremlin?

As an added note, this little guy's parents are completely unrelated. Mom is a pet-type BEW Angora from the pet store I work at and the dad is a show-type PEW from Beth at Mousery Moments.

AW! How the heck did you get that? Seems extremely lucky if you ask me! I'm fairly certain it's a gremlin...they are so rare.

I wish I knew! Lol.

I was trying to breed for BEW, no gremlin. tongue

From what I've read, Gremlin is a recessive gene, so what are the odds of 2 unrelated mice carrying such a rare gene?!

"gremlin" that's been seen in the fancy has been pretty random...did not seem to be a simple recessive.

In the other "gremlin" type animals I've seen....the low ear was still shaped normally. This mouse looks like the low ear is deformed...but it'll be interested to see how it matures!

I don't know if it's the same thing as the other gremlin mice that have been in the fancy, but it does have a deformed ear, for sure.

I need a culled gremlin, or gremlin-like mouse, for a museum. Basically name your price, and I'll pay it.
But you should definitely at least test breed it once. I think it's just a random deformity though, and not actual 'gremlin' deformity.

Sorry Rhasputin, he's not for sale, lol. I'll be keeping him and a couple of his sisters to test breed and see if any more pop up or if it's just a one-time fluke.

I have a hairless buck with a deformed ear whom you probably would have liked, but he's been adopted.

If I get any more babies with funky ears I'll be sure to keep you in mind.

Whatever it is it would be nice to see pics of him when he's mature, just to see how the shape and placement develop with age.

Please let me know if you change your mind. Even if it's a year from now. Happy
At the very least, please keep me in mind when his time comes, naturally.
The museum is very keen on getting a mouse with an ear deformity.

Yes unfortunately. I don't mean that the mouse should be put down for a bounty, and no other reason, just to please keep in mind whenever he does come to the end of his life, that there is an educational group that would really love to have him! tongue

I'll be sure to keep you in mind for him or any other mice I get with ear deformities. I'll be sure to pass your info on to the person getting Van Gogh as well(the TH with a deformed ear).

Oh, Ok. Thanks for that. Glad you did not mean kill him. Yes, I agree when his little life ends that would be reasonable.

He's adorable. It will be interesting to see how his ear develops.

Wow. His ear does not look deformed in these pics. I would say he is definately a gremlin. I love him! He is so darn cute!

I think the entire left side of the face looks malformed..... I still don't think its a gremlin.

I agree with Stina, I think it's a moderate cranial deformity.

Well consider that dumbo in rats is caused by a cranial deformity as well. It's just one that is very stable, and almost never causes problems.
I would imagine that the original gremlin gene is also a type of skull deformity, and likely so is dumbo in mice. Though to my knowledge only the dumbo rats were ever reproduced with any reliability.

In person his skull doesn't look deformed. I think he's just holding his head funny in that picture. The funky ear tends to create a bit of a visual illusion, lol. I always think he's tilting his head because of it, even though he's not. tongue

The distance from the front of his eye to the tip of his nose is very different left to right in the pic from above... In the last pic the shape of his skull looks asymmetrical as well....
