What color am I?
Out of the black true hairless X (prolly beige) standard, we got a mix of black and beige, but I'm wondering what one girl is?
Okay, the picture is really blurry, but I need new batteries and this is all I could get. Female is on the right, black brother is on the left.
I know I'll be able to tell better as she get's older, but any ideas for now?

It looks dark brown to me, I could be mistaken though. Which would probably mean she is mink.
mink is a very common brown recessive gene in rats.

Thanks! I was thinking maybe chocolate, and was reading that bad blacks can look like bad chocolates. I'll update with pics as she grows. Is there a Finnmouse equivalent for rat genetics? In the past I've used this site: http://www.afrma.org/ratgenpart3.htm but I think I'd like to get a little more in depth/better understanding with this.

Cool, thanks for the link! I'll be sure to put up more pictures as she gets older so we can see how the coat comes in.

I'd also vote mink. My favourite in rats!

Better picture today!
I'm thinking the hooded ones are also dark brown, but not as chocolaty as the berk girl above.

This is a picture of the little female's aunt, Nibbler. We always thought she was black, but now I'm not so sure. Yes, she is dark, but she looks more brown then black to me. Poor black or something else like her niece?
She just escaped my hand like a slinky, she's soooo hyper. : / So glad I have boys.

Re: What color am I?
I really have no idea. Nibbler's mother and father were bought from the same pet store, and it is quite likely they were closely related. For the crossing in the young litter above, the father Dr. Z is in no way related to the mother, Chemo.
I'm more likely to think the babies are mink; they are lighter and it sounds like it is a fairly common recessive thing? I've never seen any at petco though, where chemo came from.
Can anyone show me bad black? Mentioned, I've ready that bad black and chocolate can mimic each other, if someone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great! Is chocolate something rare/unusual to find in a pet store?

Re: What color am I?
Chocolate rats are extremely uncommon. Mink is common...but I don't think I've ever seen any so dark. I'd be more prone to think bad black than mink for rats this dark...but **shrug** There is a new group on Facebook called Rat Breeders in the USA that has a couple breeders that specifically breed the different browns and blacks, so there is likely someone there who might have a better idea than we do
