Ugh Lice... Empty Ugh Lice...

Post by Alcuzey Fri Apr 27, 2012 3:37 pm

So I have a little buck that I got about a week ago. He is a really cute little long haired satin black tan with white dot on his head....but, he seems to have lice. I just noticed it this morning when I saw little white specs on his muzzle in his black fur. Then I went on FM to look at what it could be, and saw what adult lice look like. I look on him and he has them on his back under his fur.
I know that I need ivermectin to treat him and will be going to petsmart in a bit to see if I can find anything there. What is the most cost effective way to treat this thing?

Ivermectin. Petsmart won't have it, you need to go to a farm store like Tractor Supply...you want the cattle pour on product that is...I think 5mg/ml? You dilute it 5 parts water to 1 part of the pour on and spritz it on or drop it on. I would treat any mice you have.

Yeah I am going to...I actually ordered some online cuz I found it cheaper but it won't get here til Monday. I have him in a separate room from Jillian and Jaeda but I may have been carrying them on my clothes or something.
Are my dogs alright?

Your dogs should be ok. I would definitely treat all of the mice though...it won't hurt them, and it will make sure they don't end up passing it back and forth.

Ok that's good to hear. Will they be ok waiting until Monday or Tuesday when it is delivered? I have not noticed J.D. (The boy) itching AT ALL, other than grooming, so maybe it is really really early on. I cleaned out and scrubbed both cages and changed the bedding so I think that will help a little bit.

Bird mite and lice spray woudl also help. Happy It is gentle enough for mice and rats and it does work well.

Ok, there is some of that stuff at Petco and Petsmart. I looked. I'll stop by tomorrow after my final to get some.
I've been using my Iver since Monday night and I can no longer find the adults on the little man, but the eggs are still stuck to his face. I want them out! haha! I put a little on my ladies too. I have 2 rats that live in my bedroom as well, should I treat them also? The same way?
And one last question, TFM says that the mice lice and grab onto humans, but that site has a way of making things WAY worse than they actually are. Should I be worried about myself getting them? Just the thought is making my head itchy!!!

I would treat the rats as well...just in case...

You can't really get rid of the eggs...you'll just have to wait till they hatch and treat again. Personally I wouldn't bother adding another antiparasitic if you are already using ivermectin. I would just use the ivermectin every 7-10 days for 3 weeks or so, and then every 14 days or so for a couple months.

Alright, I will do that then. If I have hay toys and other chewy things that can't be truly washed, will I need to throw those away?

Yup- any non cleanable toys should be tossed. And I definately agree with Stina. Stick with one antiparasitic. I would also treat the rats just in case.
