HELP - Weird head bobbing in a snake

Post by kawmice on Sat May 05, 2012 12:42 am

Hey guys! I have a new Spider Ball Python I had bought at the reptile show last saturday. Yesterday I noticed that he was neulogically inapropriate. He was head bobbing and tilting his head to the side. He is a young snake, but not a hatchling. I am also very attached to him - I named him Spider. Orgional, I know. LOL His personality is awsome!

Does anyone have an idea what this could be?? I was going to take him to the vet today but the only vet there who sees reptiles was doing sugrery (on my cat). He does seem better today, but I can still see he is a bit off. He last ate, according to the breeder, last tuesday or friday - I can't remember when exactly. I will try to offer him some food tonight but I am worried.

Any advice would be great. He does not have any outward signs or a URI, which was the first thing I thought of.

There are quite a few problems that it could be. Worst case scenario it could be something permanent, and fatal, best case scenario it's just a URI, or minor neurological damage.

If you can't find your answers here, try Ball-pythons.net , it has a great forum with tons of info.

Also, make sure you keep him QT'd from your other snakes for good measure.

Thanks Casey! And Stina- I have no clue which breeder I got him from. I was rushing and forgot to grab a card. Sad very stupid of me, I know.

He is away from my other snakes and I will be taking him to a vet soon. I read on another reptile forum that it could be stress from being in a new home. Could this be true? I will definately check the forum you mentioned.

Even though I have not had Spider for long I am attached and would hate for this to be a fatal thing. He has such a great personality. Not to mention that I also paid quite a bit for him. Sad

Thanks! Yea- he is soooo pretty and very sweet.

I found him the the middle isles. The guy had a huge blood python with him I believe. He had the two spiders and two beautiful pibalds with them in an acrylic cage. They were siblings. So my guy carriers piebald.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't someone I know should be avoided!

Guess what?!,

According to a snake forum/ ball section a few people, breeders, said that spider balls commonly have this problem and it is normal. I will have to copy and paste the responses when I get access to a computer. Lol

Its called woobles...and saddly many spiderballs have the problem. Many think we should stop breeding them because of it. Sounds like you got one with a bad case. You should not breed it. Otherwise it will be fine. Dont feed live since its nerologically impared..among hundreds of other reasons.

Thanks for the advice! His weaving/bobbing has improved but I will not be breeding him. And I will definately keep him on f/t. His breeder was feeding f/t anyway and that helps. Draco , my regular morph, eats f/t or live. I got lucky- he is not picky. Lol.
