So exciting! Only 3 days til the imported mice arrive!
So very very exciting! I am getting a trio of reds and a trio of black tans! I am so excited I could pop! They turned out to be more expensive than I hoped...but not as bad as I first feared. Looks like we are paying 50 to 60 dollars per mouse. Well worth it!!!
I know a few folks on this board are getting some. Anyone else ready to bounce off the walls like me???
OH...and anyone on this mouse train that would like a lovely pied blue buck? He is just weaned and is from Beth's stock. I have a pedigree for him if there is any interest. He is free to a good home and can travel to you with your European friends! Do let me know!

I am too excited!,
If Casey and Stina are ok with it, I could use the pied blue buck. It would be up to them because I would be picking him and my two Siamese splashed does up at Stina's house on Thursday.

I hate to say no...but I really don't want to expose my UK mice to any other mice if possible...they're going to be stressed enough from the shipping already, and I would hate to potentially introduce them to something when their immune systems are already stressed. Sorry christine...I just really don't want to risk it.

You know, I did not think of that! Then I would definately turn him down anyway. So yea, I understand completely! And I do agree with you.

(Tell me about the pied blue buck. How old is he? What's the proportion of white to blue?)
Re: So exciting! Only 3 days til the imported mice arrive!
What is incredible to me, is that so many talented and dedicated people came together to make this happen. I am really thrilled and impressed at the professional way this was handled. I wish I'd known that I'd be able to afford more than one or two!

Yeah, I'm really wanting to work something out with you lucky people who are getting the mice from the import and eventually get some F1 offspring I missed the opportunity to get in on the shipment and hope in the future there may be more chances...I would be just as happy with their babies though.
Too cool!!

Woo! I'm sitting in candycorn's downstairs at this moment, waiting for tomorrow.
As an aside, because the British mice are all in one container (albeit in separate slots), they've all been pretty thoroughly exposed to eachother. They were boarded in the same airspace shortly before being flown in the same airspace, so I have to say they're pretty well exposed. If anything, make sure you protect your mice from them, more than you protect them from other mice.
I'd quarantine for a good while, longer if you're receiving one of the pregnant does, as the Brits have had some bugs going around. We didn't get mice from the folks with rotovirus, but we can't know what they were exposed to before they got on the plane.

Re: So exciting! Only 3 days til the imported mice arrive!
Remember that these mice are from another country.....they may have recently been exposed to eachother...but that only exposes them to what might be around in the UK....our mice may be carrying COMPLETELY different illnesses....and their traveling will make their immune systems much weaker than normal...so not only could US mice introduce them to diseases their immune systems are not accustomed to, but their immune systems will already be compromised and make it even harder for them to fight things off, let alone things their lines may never have been exposed to. I, personally, am not willing to take that risk if it can be at all avoided. As an aside, because the British mice are all in one container (albeit in separate slots), they've all been pretty thoroughly exposed to eachother. At any rate...I am so excited!!!!

Re: So exciting! Only 3 days til the imported mice arrive!
What do you think about offering them yogurt during QT to boost their immune systems?
Whenever people get sugar gliders from me I always suggest offering them a dab of yogurt each night for the first week to help stave off stress-induced bacterial infections.

Stina- To each their own.
Love-Some British breeders on FMB have had mixed reviews about whether their mice tolerate dairy. On the other hand, yogurt is an awful lot easier to handle than milk.

I'm never said no one else can do it...I just said that I'm not willing to risk it.
As far as yogurt...I've never heard of anyone having had issues with it...just make sure its plain, unflavored yogurt. It mostly helps in the gut, but that can be important with stressed animals who tend to end up with some digestive upset.

Re: So exciting! Only 3 days til the imported mice arrive!
If I remember correctly, the probiotics in yogurt help aid in the digestion of the lactose in the yogurt and allow lactose-intolerant animals/people to eat the yogurt without it causing any issues.
I'm lactose intolerant and have never had any issues with yogurt. Then again, I like to boost my tolerance every now and then by downing a half gallon of ice cream and regretting it later. Bwahaha!

LOL
but yes, its true that the enzymes in yogurt aid in the digestion of the lactose. Most lactose intollerant people i've known have had little or no problems with yogurt.

Re: So exciting! Only 3 days til the imported mice arrive!
I have customers who can't handle even yogurt, but that's two out of several hundred. I think the difference is a matter of intolerance versus allergy. And yeah, plain plain plain yogurt makes a huge difference. Dannon Plain usually has live cultures good enough to make new yogurt out of, so you should get the best results there.
Also, if I haven't already mentioned here, if you're getting one of the reds, Anne Tomkins said they've been eating equal parts oats and birdseed, so keeping them on an oat-heavy diet for a little while should help them out until you can convert them to your food.

If it's equal parts oats and bird seed, then suggesting a seed heavy diet is more helpful. You could see a drop in their weights if they get switched to a diet with lower fat content. A diet that's 50% grain and 50% seed is very seed heavy, and high in fat..
I think my mix is 70-80% grains, for example.

I'm just letting anybody who is getting REDS know that the breeder suggested a higher-oat diet until they're settled in. I figure her opinion is the trump, when it comes to her mice.
