Pregnant mouse help?

Post by doganddisc on Fri May 18, 2012 7:50 pm

I've got a pregnant girl who is in the last days of the swallowed golf ball stage of her pregnancy. She perched herself onto of her igloo about an hour ago and has been there ever since. It's possible she's asleep, so I might be jumping the gun on this one, but I'm not sure and figured it's best to ask anyway.

I'm worried she might be in labor- but I don't understand her decision to sit on top of the little igloo. I keep seeing the muscles on her back twitch (contract?) she seems to be breathing pretty heavily. She occasionally stretches her frong legs and cleans her belly, but then starts breathing heavily again.

I don't want to bother her and put her back on the ground, but I'm worried about her. I'm keeping an eye on her. Is there anything I should be doing?

Ah, so she's moved on to grooming herself on top of the igloo now. Apparently there's nothing to worry about. Silly girl had me concerned though!

Is always funny the little things they do isn't it. I've seen some pretty weird behavior during labor so it wouldn't be unusual. Most of my mice have their babies during the night when no one is watching, lol.

I hope she's just being an oddball, Beth! She got off the igloo and waddled over to her food bowl for a minute. I was relieved, though now she's managed to get back up on top of the igloo and is hanging the front part of her body off of it like she's dying. I think she's just being dramatic.

Maybe she is in labor and the top of her igloo somehow makes her feel better. In birthing class they teach you to focus on a happy place Happy

Maybe stretching out makes the pressure on her abdomen feel better? I've always thought animals seem to have the idea about it; they get up, walk around, get comfy, move around some more, generally do what their bodies tell them to do.

She is doing quite well! She still keeps perching on top of the igloo and hanging down, so I think Laigaie was right about her stretching out to help with pressure on the abdomen. Otherwise I haven't seen anything else that is a cause for concern. She was pretty active today and has a nice nest built up in preparation for baby arrival!

She is due on the 21st. Since this is the first mouse I've intentionally bred, I am quite excited!

How exciting! Be sure to keep us posted! What color is the doe and what color babies are you expecting? What is your breeding goal?

Doe and Buck were both himi- hoping actually for another buck like the father but with better coat. He's a poor rex (from Cindy, according to Cindy) but a great looking buck (IMHO).

The buck is a rex and the doe is a texel- I wouldn't mind having more texel himis too Happy Since I got such a variety of colors at RF I'm trying to expand the numbers of mice with specific coloring (ones I want to work with) so I can be much more selective in relation to type.
