Re: Hairless mouse breeding, and nails (split from No litters)
FWIW, I have a TH doe from Rhasputin and she isn't tiny. She is on par with some of my smaller mice though.
Which reminds me to ask when I keep thinking about asking- how does one go about making a TH carrier? Breed to a TH, which would give you a litter of carriers? (Then breed back to the TH to get more TH?)

If you breed a hairless mouse, to a standard mouse, all the mice in the litter will be carriers.

Woohoo, thank you I have no plans to breed hairless right now, but it's good to know it's an option.

Also in that pic it looks like your hairless girl might be getting some pimples. What kind of bedding is she on?

She is on aspen- but those aren't pimples. When I was cutting her nails a few days ago, she jerked and it started bleeding. I used a mix of flour and baking soda to stop the bleeding and that's just the clumps of it left over that stuck to her.

You cut yours' nails too?!?! I nearly lopped off a foot on one when they wiggled too much, so I need to get some infant/baby clippers before I do it next. Both my hammies and my TH have nail growth issues. Lol.

Yeah, this girl has major nail growth issues! I cut her nails once a week or so, otherwise they curl under her feet. She is actually fantastic at staying still while I'm doing the cutting though- if I grip her in my hand, she seems to understand that this is the "stay still or it will hurt" part of our interaction. But sometimes she gets a little over excited..

I use a tiny pair of sewing scissors to cut my hairless mouse's nails. Seems to work really well, I think I'd probably be nicking toes if I was using clippers.

I use a tiny pair of scissors as well. No idea what they're actually for but they work really well with the tiny nails.

Brave souls. Cutting my rats' nails was hard enough. Heck, I get nervous doing my Golden Retriever's! Always worried about hitting the quick.

I had a rat several years ago who had a malocclusion after falling from a shelf in her cage and breaking her teeth. I took her to the vet but I had to trim her teeth myself after that. That has been the worst trimming of anything I have ever had to do. **cringe**
I'll try the sewing scissors on my TH and hammies next time!

Yeah the teeth can be bad too. My vet had to do a tooth trim too and it did not look easy. And then the lovely rat forum chewed me out for it. One should never cut rat teeth they said. *eye roll*

I used to do my rabbits teeth myself in the early 90s. It was easy but I can't imagine doing something as small as one of those little rodents!
