Save Mouseville's hot oil heater! Empty Save Mouseville's hot oil heater!

Post by Mrs. Beach Sat May 26, 2012 5:25 pm

My husband is very set against my using the hot oil heater in Mouseville. He says at 1500 watts it uses a ton of electricity and that I need to leave it unplugged a lot of the time. The trouble is that the air handler (chiller) for the house is in Mouseville and without a source of heat in the room, the temperature will be about 65-67 degrees, which is kinda cold for mousies and baby mousies and ME! Before I got the hot oil heater lots of my mice had colds. Now colds are extremely rare in Mouseville. I leave it on all the time set on minimum at the very lowest setting on the dial.

Is there any evidence, schedule, chart, comparison table out there that says how economical a hot oil heater is or how little it costs to run one?

I know a lot of you use them and told me they were economical when I was looking at buying one. I need facts and figures! I need PROOF!

Depending on your cost of electricity, if you ran the heater all day every day for 30 days, it would cost about $80 unless I'm doing the math completely wrong. Upset

I looked up cost of running 1500 watt per hour, and it's about $0.15 per hour

Wow! Thanks. That does make it sound very expensive. But what about the fact that the hearter does not run constantly but goes on and off, governed by the thermostat? Would you mind sending me the URL's to the sites you went to so I can research this further (assuming you'd prefer not to)?

Going on and off might actually make it even more expensive, as it would need to use more energy to heat up/cool down. It depends on how often it is going on and off.

Given the average 15c/hr, you'd just have to determine how many hours a day it's on.

Geeze! And that depends on the changing mean temperature of the room. Any idea how to figure this out?

I'm sure there's some kind of meter you could buy, but I think that isn't really fixing the money problem! tongue

That sounds awfully high..... I use them and with it plugged in and on ALL day during the Winter plus the rest of our electricity, our total bill is like $130. We have natural gas for heating, hot water and the stove, so that accounts for a lower power bill but sheesh! We used two of the oil heaters in the last place we lived.
