Help my mouse has little tiny black bugs!!
Stoney, I got him at the RF show. First he got a respiratory infection. I cleared that up. I cleared him just this week to go in the mouse room. Now, I noticed he has these bugs. Poor guy has a spot that is a bit scabby and bald. Help. I immediately took him out of the room, but he has been there almost a week. Now what do I do!!!!! Can any other animals or humans get this???

Re: Help my mouse has little tiny black bugs!!
I haven't dealt with mites so I will let somebody else answer this.
Re: Help my mouse has little tiny black bugs!!
Actually, it seems like lice!
Do you have a Tractor Supply, or orchelens, or other small farm supply close to you?
You need to get an Ivermectin pour on for cattle. It should be around $15 for a big bottle. You can also use injectable as a pour on, but it's more pricey. From there, dilute it with water in a ratio of 5 parts water, one part ivermectin. It's easiest to to do this in a spray bottle. Spray the mice and their bedding down once a week or every few days. It is safe for pregnant and nursing does. You may as well do it to all your mice!
It takes about 6 weeks to clear up. Once you see fur regrowing (if any has been lost) you need to keep it up for a week or two to make sure it's cleared up.
There also isn't any harm in using it preventatively once a month or so.
Good luck Robin! This happens to the best of us.

I use revolution but use it off label. Lol
Also- reptile mite spray works great as well as bird mite and lice spray.

All these years of raising guinea pigs, hamsters, and such I have never had this problem. How does one get it???? Can I, my dogs, hamsters, guinea pig or birds get them????? Yeck, I am soo creeped out. I think I have bird spray. Can I use it on nursing moms, babies, pregnant moms.????? So Lice are black. I would have guess mites. What color are mites.

Mites are usually black/red/tan/white, but don't usually cause hair loss unless the animal is scratching a lot.

See..... I woudl vote for mites, since they are so common. I would guess you probably might have gotton them from some contaminated bedding at the petstore. Freezing the bedding will prevent this. I also spray the bedding down to help.
The sprays I recomended are very mouse safe and good to use on newnborns and pregnant and nursing moms.

Re: Help my mouse has little tiny black bugs!!
Is anybody else worried about what breeder this mouse came from?
Re: Help my mouse has little tiny black bugs!!
Being that it was over a month ago I do not think anyone is worried about them coming from the breeder.
Re: Help my mouse has little tiny black bugs!!
Couldn't the eggs have been on his fur and only just hatched? (I'm asking because I don't know.)
Re: Help my mouse has little tiny black bugs!!
I believe the eggs only stay eggs for 7 days and then hatch. Mice have such warm bodies and eggs hatch quickly. Lol
Re: Help my mouse has little tiny black bugs!!
Being I got him sick from the show, I am going to guess he had them and I just didn't know it. I could not find the stuff at my local pet store, so off I go to petsmart today. I will keep you posted.

Re: Help my mouse has little tiny black bugs!!
If you did not notice he had them that week after the show then he did not get them from the breeder. You recieved him mite free. mice and other critters can get mites and lives from the bedding. You most likely got the mites from the bedding at the pet store. The bedding contained the eggs.
Re: Help my mouse has little tiny black bugs!!
I understand what you are saying. But, I wasn't looking for them. He was not in the best shape when I got him. I just thought he was real lazy. I do believe he had them all along.

Robin. This is impossible. The breeder who picked him up from someone else had him for about a month then you have had him for over a month. Even if you were not looking for them they would have Been obvious to you.
Trust me- I have been actively breeding since 2001 and know what I am talking about.
Read my pm.

Red Lake Earth® Diatomaceous Earth with Calcium Bentonite, 20 lb.
This works best for lice, mites, etc and is safe for ppl and pets to even eat. That was the only thing that worked for me to get rid of pests even when our puppy came w lice from the breeder. It kills them fast. I use the powder in a parmesan shaker and add it to the bottom of cages every time I clean them from now on to prevent mites etc. They sell it at tractor supply but you might be able to get it or another brand of it online too.
Ivermectin never worked for me in the spray form or the revolution form...
