Finally! Pregnant! *New Pictures 7/1/12*
I just checked the girl rats (I only have 2) and one of them is finally starting to show a belly! I'm ecstatic. She is heavier and has a definite roundness to her belly when I lift her slightly.

Congrats!! I too am waiting on some possibly preggo girls. Haven't had a rat litter in many many years so I am super excited. I should have weighed the girls from the get go to follow progress but didn't think about it til now. I *think* at least one might be pregnant, but I don't really know for sure. They have about 7-10 days to go.

Thanks, and YES. It's so hard first getting started, but after the dam breaks..tons of babies.

OH MY. I'm so excited, I just heard considerably louder squeaking from my mouse/rat/reptile room and realized my girl is giving birth!
I'm almost 100% sure the father was my slate blue dumbo, and she herself is hooded with a mystery color. Possibly Russian blue or blue agouti. YAY EEKERS.

Gosh, they're twin litters! Tell me about the parents, we have to exchange pictures when we're not scared as poop of stressing the mom (I know I am!)
Re: Finally! Pregnant! *New Pictures 7/1/12*
Bug is the dam. She is an American blue variegated. The sire is Othello, a black Irish rex (all of my rats are dumbo eared). I don't know what either parents carry, but I'm expecting black Irish dumbos in rex and standard coats. Hoping to keep a few babies to breed back to each other to get more blues. My other doe that is expecting is a mink, possibly merle. Sire is the same and I'm planning to do the same as the aforementioned litter.
I totally know what you mean! I've been kind of naughty and have been taking peeks here and there, and so far mom seems to be relatively okay. Still not brave enough to look long enough to count how many babies there are though.

I finally got around to convincing mom to let me borrow the baby tube (she's nesting in an oatmeal cylinder, damn near impossible to see the babies unless she's gone)..and WOW. I'm sure I've seen rat pinks before, but these guys are HUGE. I couldn't believe my eyes. They look like blues but are just getting some pigment, I really only handled one and counted the others. Six fat snausages!

I know, I can't get over how huge they are either. My girl has 11 bubs.
Re: Finally! Pregnant! *New Pictures 7/1/12*
I guess I've only really seen rat pinks from a pet store? I guess it shows the difference between breeding in bulk and home grown rats. Her babes literally had fat rolls! Well, that and I'm so used to mice babies by now.
Re: Finally! Pregnant! *New Pictures 7/1/12*
I wasn't going to post this (it's crappy, and the only one I have) but I'm curious to know if it's possible to tell if the ears are dumbo or standard at this age. I'm also surprised at how much pigment is there considering they're only a day or so old at this point.
Now I'm even second-guessing the birth date..haha! But I only heard them peeping the 29th.

OKAY I caved. Here's the full litter, seven of them! All blues, I think, and some dumbo. I had to move them out of the tube so I could monitor them better, so now she's nesting under some fabric instead. I really hated to disturb her.

Do you have a picture thread for them? I'd love to see!
Re: Finally! Pregnant! *New Pictures 7/1/12*
So cute!! I will start a thread and post pics of mine as soon as I get back from watching my bosses house for the holiday.
Re: Finally! Pregnant! *New Pictures 7/1/12*
I have camera issues that I just NEED to fix. Lol. Then watch out! I love taking pictures. :-)

Gahhhh! Rat bubs! <3 I know I'm going to cave and get a pair sometime in the next few months. I've gone 4 months without, and that's 4 months too long.

I do love my rats! I have one that's huge, he's the friendliest little bachelor ever. I flip him lightly and tickle his belly and he just goes nuts.

I'm back to six (had to cull a poor babe whose foot was constricted in stupid cotton bedding) and just checked on them. Mom bites me a little but I'm trying to get her used to me touching her and the babies (she let me pet her face and back a bit). I'm getting some peach fuzz and the babies are still HUGE! Well, hugER. Now they look black, go figure! Whatever they are, I'll love them to pieces and use them to build my colony.
