hair loss and no solution, Help! Empty hair loss and no solution, Help!

My two-year-old texel rex buck began loosing hair on his back in January. He is a lone mouse. The vet found mites after a skin scraping and he had six applications of Ivermectin, 10 days apart. After each application, the hair would begin to grow back, then fall out again. I brought him back to the vet last week and the skin cytology showed no mites, but some yeast. I got a prescription for an antifungal (Miconazole lotion 1 percent) and have been putting a drop on his back everyday for the last five days. I'm supposed to check back with the vet in 3 days. So far there is no hair regrowth. I have disinfected his cage, toys, feeding dish and water bottle twice by soaking overnight in a bleach and water solution, then rinsing and drying well. I've changed the source of bedding and food. He is active, eats and drinks normally. I don't know if the hair loss is due to parasites, aging, disease, or genetics. I learned on this forum that some texel rex mice can develop a genetic flaw leading to hair loss. My vet bills for the mouse are over $200 and I'm not getting any results. Help!

I was told to use diatomaceous earth food grade for mites. I don't know how it is supposed to be applied though. I mixed one part powder and five parts water and rubbed it in to wet fur. Also, virgin coconut oil may help the irritation. I'm going to try it. It's antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral. It's also soothing. Let me know if you find anything out about the mites. This is my first mite experience.

I'm also giving him probiotics and vitamin drops to boost his immune system. Happy

The antifungal lotion from the vet finally worked to get rid of the yeast.  Some fur has grown back, slowly.  Schtunkie then developed a head tilt, which I described in another post.  It may have been from the Ivermectin given to kill the mites, and it did kill them.  Recently, I have heard that Ivermectin can cause some neurological problems in mice. Or it may have been from an ear infection which can also cause head tilt.  The antibiotic liquid the vet prescribed for a possible ear infection seemed to reduce his head tilt; but he still has a slight tilt after treatment.  It seems that one thing leads to another.  I'm not going back to the vet for now.  Schtunkie seems to be doing OK for a rather old mouse.  Thanks for responding.  Good luck with the mite treatment and watch out for Ivermectin.

Schtunkie is a lovely name. I'm glad he's doing better. Invermectin seems a little risky. I am hoping coconut oil and the earth work. He already seems less itchy. Happy
