One of our mice is a Brindle mouse that is obese. She drinks a lot of water everyday. We are wondering if she may have diabetes. Does anyone have a experience with this? She always has more than enough water available to her.

Otherwise she is totally healthy and a very happy mouse! She lives with her "sister" and they get along very well.

Thank you for any advice you can give to me.

With animals, excessive water consumption is a good indicator for diabetes. Unfortunately, brindles can be prone to this, for the same reasons that they're prone to obesity.

That said, there are a few other reasons mice will consume heavy amounts of water.

What's her diet like? Excessive salt or sugar will increase water consumption.

Any chance she's pregnant? This also increases water consumption.

And what are the temperatures like during the day and at night? If she's hot, she'll be going through a LOT more water than normal.

Thanks for your answer. Both Minnie and Dumbo have the same diet. They eat mouse food and Cheerios.

Dumbo is a female and so is Minnie, so there is zero chance she is pregnant. We turn the AC on as soon as it gets the least bit warm. It is a steady 70 degrees in the house at all times.

Is there anything that can be done for Minnie if she does have Diabetes? She is such a calm, kind, and sweet mouse! Dumbo is the same way! We are so lucky to have such great mice!

I'm glad you enjoy your mice! I've worked at several vet hospitals, and the smallest thing we could treat were ferrets. I'm sure it's possible to get a blood panel done on her by a small animal vet, and possibly insulin if that's her problem. Then again, it's all so costly! In the same position, I would just let her live on happily as long as she might.

If she does have diabetes, it is theoretically possible to administer insulin and test her sugar levels. Realistically, it would be an exceptionally high cost with a relatively low benefit.

If her diabetes is extreme, it may eventually damage her extremities or cause bladder infections. More likely, the other consequences of obesity will catch up with her faster. Things like high blood pressure, I suspect, are more likely to contribute to her actual demise. Strokes and heart attacks are not as uncommon in mice as we'd like.

Though she and Dumbo have the same diet, that diet may be too much for Minnie, but fine for Dumbo, because Dumbo is not a brindle. Do you know what brand of mouse food, or what kind? Some foods are labeled as mouse foods, but actually contain large amounts of sugar, fat, and other things that aren't awesome for mice.

I would suggest that even if she does have diabetes, the best thing would be to enjoy her company and her relative good health for as long as it holds out, and be prepared to let her go when it comes to the end.

It is particularly unfortunate that brindle mice are sold as pets to owners who are not aware of the different medical needs and realities of the variety. While I don't believe the suffering breeds should not be bred, perhaps they should not be sold as pets to those who do not know. :/ No amount of pretty is worth having your pet die any earlier than they would've otherwise. We love them all the same.

I do agree with the idea of just letting her live out her life.

I really have nothing to contribute to this thread since I feel everything that could be said was so already. Good luck with your baby.

Thank you for all of your advice. I think I will make a vet appointment and have her checked. I knew when I bought Minnie that she was prone to more illnesses and obesity.
I will check her mouse food to make sure it has a relatively low sugar amount. If I need to change her food, I will gladly do it.

Thanks!
