What kind of cages do you use? Empty What kind of cages do you use?

I'm trying to figure out what kind of cage I should get/make for the rats arriving on Saturday. My guinea pigs live in a cube and coroplast cage that I was making a second level for, but I've considered turning that second level into a rat cage with hardware cloth. Not sure how I would go about making the door though.

I also purchased a 66 quart storage bin thinking it might work to save on space (I don't have a lot of space) but it looks much too small to me. I know rats do much better with a lot of space.

So what do you use for your rats? Any suggestions?

Rats also need really good ventilation. I used a ferret nation or critter nation cage in the past. Now mine is another monster rat specific cage from petsmart. I will take a photo tomorrow for you. I love it and so do the boys.

That would be wonderful! Thank you!

I prefer Martins Cages for various reasons, ventilation and ease of cleaning being key. I have a single unit Critter Nation but it is a pain to clean in my opinion. Urine can seep into tiny spaces that are difficult or nearly impossible to clean. I also chose to purchase a separate galvanized pan and primer + paint because the floor of the CN is too shallow for aspen bedding otherwise. I do like that it sits on a stand/wheels. I prefer to keep my cages elevated because my dogs are brats. Wink

Here is my girls R-690 (sitting on top of the CN):

Here is a similar thread I started some time ago (in the wrong section, d'oh! Embarassed ): http://www.themouseconnection.org/t111-what-do-you-use

Edited to add that as I get further into my breeding program I'm hoping to use racks similar to mouselover01's in the aforementioned thread.

I've been using two of the biggest storage bins I could find at Walmart, and stacked them on each other to make a "rat castle." It's light, but at my new place they are really awkward to haul down and around the steps. My friend has a Martins Cage, and come the end of summer I am probably going to upgrade to one. They really are nice, I don't know if I like the mesh floor, but with enough hammocks it really isn't a big deal.

Thistlebrook, I absolutely LOVE the Martins Cages. I would have a few huge ones if I had the space!

I ended up purchasing this for now: What kind of cages do you use? Ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

What kind of cages do you use? 61qKEmWVlTL._SS500_

It has some good reviews and fits into the only space I have left in my room for it. Some people have made pretty neat modifications to the cage so I'm sure with a little work I can get it to where I like it. Happy

Please do keep posting more cage suggestions!

Oops, my girls cage is actually an R-680. Anyway, I love them too, just wish they weren't so expensive. I've been lucky in that I got two of mine (an R-685 and an R-690) for $40 each off of Craigslist! I also advise getting powder-coated vs just the galvanized.

I've had that cage before; got it used off of Craigslist. It was okay, my biggest issue was the plastic shelves which collected rivers of urine (I resorted to sopping it up with a paper towel at least once a day) and the fact that the shelves were a PITA to replace after cleaning. One of the bars in a corner had broken too so I worried about any younger rats squeezing through. I ended up tossing it eventually. Rat

Yeah, I figured that would be an issue with the plastic. I'll probably end up pulling the plastic shelves out and replacing it with wood shelves (the rats can chew away at them all they want then).
