Black and Tan Breeding Empty Black and Tan Breeding

Post by bcluv Tue Jul 17, 2012 9:20 am

I will be acquiring some foundation black and tan mice this fall as a beginning to my lines. But I am also a totally newbie in the realm of genetics and so I am seeking advice and information on the best way to maintain the lines.

Can anyone share any knowledge and experience in maintaining a black/tan line? Are you specifically breeding just black tan to black tan to maintain? What about improving the tan color on the belly? Is there an out cross to help with the belly color and the black color?

Any information you can give me would be very helpful! I'm trying to learn what I can now so that I can format a plan before my mice arrive Happy

It's best to breed tan to tan if it's at all possible. If you breed tan to non tan you end up with some sootyness on the belly.

If you have access to dominant red or cinnamon, that is what some people prefer to help the color. If not, and really only a few do at this point, I've been using RY for several generations with no heartaches or troubles. It ruins the RY, but those can just be culled when they are colored up in the nest. Overall the bellies of mine were pretty nice (until the imports came in, lol).

But all that being said, if you have access to the new imports or a good red/cinnamon I'd go with that. I had to start with RY because I lived in a veritable mouse drought when I started and couldn't get anyone to ship to me. Happy Good luck!!!

Thanx! There isn't anyone all too close to me here either when it comes to breeders. I'll be doing a bit of travel and part of the mouse train in Sept to acquire foundation stock.

I also breed tans, though mostly not black tans. Tan-to-tan will give you between 75% and 100% tans, depending on whether your tans carry black(non-tan). Whoever you're getting the tans from can tell you more about your new line specifically. They ought to be able to tell you what they've been fed, whether they have any issues, what litter size they tend to see, and whether they carry anything else.
