Hello from League City, Texas
Hi. Thank you forum member Frizzle for referring me to this site.
My daughter (age 10) and I are just getting started keeping mice and I've been in search of good educational and information exchange resources. I'm a big believer in the power of forums, so I joined up here so we could have another good source of information.
We've only got a couple of mice and aren't interested in breeding at this point...just keeping and learning.
What I'd REALLY like to find are some mouse breeders in the area of Houston, Texas. I have found someone in the Bryan-College Station area (a couple of hours away), but I'm really surprised how hard it's been to identify and mouse breeders in Houston. It's a big city, so I know they're out there (at least I think they must be).
Of course there are always pet shops to buy mice...but personally I'd rather talk to and buy from those who breed them rather than those who mostly just resell them. Just a quirk of mine, I guess.
I've done a lot of animal keeping and breeding over the years, but never mice or rats, so this is new to both me and my daughter.
OK -- just saying hello.

Re: Hello from League City, Texas
Thanks for the welcome!
Is there any easy way to tell if any of those folks are near Houston?
I did a couple of quick searches for "Texas" and see someone from Austin...another from Central Texas...another from Dallas-Fort Worth area. I came up empty on a "Houston" search.
Or maybe I need to do an "Any Mice Breeders in Houston?" post in the proper subforum.
Sorry, just feeling my way through this.

Welcome from central tx area. I don't know of anyone
near Houston. I think you've identified the areas I know
of currently. Thistlebrook, Gracegarten and me. So happy
to have another Texan.

Thanks for the welcome, renapopma.
It's amazing to me that I'm having such trouble finding any fancy mouse breeders in the Houston area. Google searches, etc., mostly come up empty -- or with outdated information that's no longer accurate (bad e-mail addresses, websites that are no longer active, etc.)

Re: Hello from League City, Texas
Yes. Texas seems pretty empty of mouse breeders.
I was doing the same searches last year.

Also, the only guy I could find in TAMU area appeared to not be breeding anymore last time I checked. Have you found an active breeder there? If so, I'd
like to know him/her if they are willing for you to share contact information.
I'm about 2 hrs from there.

I'll get back to you shortly on that. I don't think they'd have any problem with me sharing the contact info, but I'll check with them first. This person is apparently an active breeder, but I have no idea about how established, etc. He or she mentioned in their e-mail that they had silkies, satins and maybe some tri-colored, for what it's worth.
Re: Hello from League City, Texas
Could be cool if they have established lines and have
chosen not to breed ones with problems. Please do ask
if they'd be comfortable with me calling and maybe seeing
their mice some day. I'm pretty laid-back. The folks I've
found here whose stock I'd prefer not to breed with, I just
haven't gone back to them. No other consequences. If they
are too shy that's okay too. I'd just like to find the Texas
breeders who may not yet be linked into a group they'd enjoy.

Re: Hello from League City, Texas
I got the OK from them to pass along their contact info. I'll PM that to you. But this is also the ad they had posted on College Station Craigslist (Community > Pets section). I don't know how long the link will remain active, though. Seems like a nice person. They readily replied to all my messages to them (courteous and friendly replies).

Re: Hello from League City, Texas
You're welcome. I haven't had any actual dealings with them yet. Just two or three e-mails back and forth. Only contacted them a couple of days ago based on running across their Craigslist ad.
Re: Hello from League City, Texas
Thanks. I sent an email. They look like pet mice rather
than show mice stock with pedigrees and health histories,
etc. I let them know of this forum in case they'd like to
learn about show mice. Enjoy!
