It's a little pink around the eye....

Post by mochaluca on Sun Jul 15, 2012 3:14 am

A few weeks ago I mixed two isolated does I got from a breeder(a satin and fuzzy) and my first two does(a recessive yellow and a monochrome) I got from Petsmart. I placed them together in a box where I can keep an eye on them of course, and after the reluctant sniffing and nipping, they eventually got along.
Recently I noticed a slight pinkness on the satin's left eye and the yellow one's left eye also. The eye seems a little crusty, and I'm really worried if it's infectious since both of them seem to have it. I've done some internet searching but all the problems mice owners online seem to have are slightly different than mine. Maybe my mice have the early stages of an eye infection? Or is it just a scratch that will heal naturally over time? A scratch is a healthy possibility since its 4 mice in a cage and there's bound to be some drama.
Should I just leave it be? I'm just really afraid that it is infectious and all my mice will get it. My last option will be bringing them to a veterinarian since my wallet is very skinny, but if it has to come to it, I will bring them there because I love them too much to let them just suffer. Should I wait it out to see if it'll heal naturally or not?
I can't get a good photo of either of them, but here they are.

Looks like it could be a start of an eye infection. You can get erythromycin eye meds online without a prescription from vet America or doctors foster and smith. It's a start and may prevent a costly vet visit.

It could have occurred due to stress from placing them together or dust or other foreign material got in the eye. Those are the two most common causes of eye infections.

How long did you QT your new mice and what bedding are you using?

I quarantined them for a week and I use Carefresh Ultra. Is there a brand or product you recommend?

I recomend always QTing them for at least 3-4 weeks. Stress will bring any illness out. No matter how great the breeder- any mouse could get sick from stress.

Carefresh is fine. They could have gotten a particle of dust in their eyes and it turned into an eye infection. It is hard to say exactly why they got this.

Update:
The brown satin mouse turned out to be fine. The pinkness subsided and both her eyes are now the same size.
But on the other hand, Monet's seem to have gotten worse. One eye is almost always closed, but it isn't getting any redder or swollen so I'm confused as to if its getting worse or if its at stalemate.
I think it might be the dust in my room that irritated her eyes. I have a high ceiling room so there are many dust in hard to reach places.

After hours on the internet searching for similar situations and remedies, I narrowed any possible help down to saline solutions. It is affordable for me especially after I spend most of my money on college textbooks, and it also seems much safer than getting antibiotics that are meant for fish.
I am planning on using a q-tip and putting saline solution around the eye, once every day and check on the progress. It seems harmless, but I wanted to make sure with you guys first that it won't do more harm than good.
Should I go ahead with the plan or just leave it be? It's not affecting her cagemates but it still looks mighty uncomfortable.
Thanks,
Luca

Saline is a flush, it is used to clean not treat. Do you have access to bacitracin or neosporin ointment? They are safe to use on the eye. Apply a small amount to the eye twice daily. You want to use sparingly.

Also, if that's CareFresh bedding, that may be the cause of your dust issue. Though, if it were just dust, you'd see it in both eyes. Squirting the saline into the eye to flush it before adding ointment or using antibiotic eye drops can be helpful, but she's right that antibiotics are the best bet for clearing up a squinty eye.
