What is good to buy at Tractor Supply? Empty What is good to buy at Tractor Supply?

Going for the first time this weekend. So far on my shopping list are:
alfalfa pellets
pine bedding
brewer's yeast for mealworms (I read it was cheaper in bulk at a feed store)

What else is a good deal to buy there?

I buy flake pine for the chickens, aspen for the mice and gpigs, chicken food, little chicken food (for the bantams), cat food, dog food, tapeworm pills (because one of my neighbors' dogs has tapeworms and keeps infecting my dogs), anything for the garden, any kind of tools that we may need...

Sometimes I buy medicines there, like Iver-on or Eqvalan.

If you own leather for any reason that I don't need to know, they have everything to take care of that, including soap and oil and brushes.

Oh! We also buy hay for the guinea pigs and guinea pig food there. Gosh. If you owned rabbits, they have lots of rabbit stuff.

Can you tell they get a lot of my money? I have a 10%off coupon at the moment, but they were out of a lot of the things we normally buy, so we have to wait until Wednesday to stock up.

What brand of aspen is it? I'm going to be going to use my 10% off coupon sometime later this week when I pick up dog food. I've been wanting to find a more cost effective alternative to the Harlan Teklad shredded aspen and sani chips that I absolutely adore, but have not been happy with the quality and amount of dust I've found in most other brands.

Is the aspen as cheap as the pine? Say! Hay! My mice love hay! And I've been paying pet store prices for plastic bags of it. I hope I don't have to buy an entire bale. Is hay from Tractor Supply, um, safe for mice? Bugs in it?

The timothy hay that's in the small animal (read guinea pig and rabbit) section is much like petstore hay. It's green rather than tan, because it's for eating. I don't know about their bigger quantities in the horse section.

The aspen is Premier Pet and is a bit dusty, but I change cages outside anyway, and don't have allergies. It's about the same as the pine, though a little more, because it's not TS brand.

Also, I promise I don't work there or anything. It's just we have a PetCo, a Petsmart, and a WalMart in town, and TS beats their prices on all the things that we buy for all our animals (and we have a lot).

I realized that I didn't mention here like I did on FB, about using Equine Fresh instead of Feline Pine if you use pine pellet cat litter. It's a whole lot cheaper, and made by the same folks as Feline Fresh, just marketed toward horses. It's I think $8 for a bag that fills 10 catboxes easily. That makes fostering kittens a whole lot more economical for us.

That stinks. Living in Fort Worth does have its advantages as far as the multitudes of feed stores in the area. tongue

Seriously. They have toys for kids, hats, hand tools, stuff for every animal domestic and wild, and they are nice! I just love to shop there for fun. If you don't have one near you I imagine they'd deliver.

I feel so left out! Lol
I am taking a trip to south Jersey this Thursday and hopefully I can stop by one. I used to get my pet bedding from a general feed store in Colorado but obviously that is not going to help me here in Jersey. Lol.

Let me know what you think of it after you go Ann. Happy sounds like it would be a happy shoping experience. Lol. Lots of goodies to be had! Happy

Speaking of giving meeple hay to play/nest in, I did that routinely until one time the incoming hay also carried in a batch of mites which then had a field day with the squeakers 'til I got everyone debugged.

The moral of this story is, if you're going to give them hay or grasses to play in that have been outside in natural environment, it's a good idea to either bake or freeze batches of it before letting them roll around in it. (Same process you'd use on aspen bedding to ensure it is mite-free).

Happy shopping at Tractor Supply, Mrs B! We go there frequently as well. I pick up my freeze-dried mealies and aspen bedding and miscellaneous toys/food items for the meeple there.

THANK YOU for the hay warning, Teramis! They have good prices on freeze dried mealies?

Teramis, is freezing in our freezer OK, or does it have to be a sub-zero freezer? If our kitchen freezer won't work, then please tell me instructions for baking the hay without setting our house on fire.

Yeah, mealie prices are very reasonable, especially if you buy the largest container.

Re mite-killing in hay: bake for 2 hrs at 200 degrees (F), or freeze for 24 hours. Home freezer is fine, as long as it is actually freezing things. I've heard some people say the cold has to be at a certain sub-zero temp, though my vet said, "cold enough to freeze" without qualifiers. I've had no problems with ordinary fridge freezer (we also have a chest freezer I use sometime for a large bag quantity). The thermometer in our new fridge tells me it is holding things at 0 degrees, but I think in the last fridge things weren't quite that chill.

If you freeze hay I think it's a good idea to let it return to room temp in a bag or container that is open to the air, so that any incidental ice condensation that occured during freezing (from moisture in the air in the bag) will have a chance to completely evaporate before you seal up the hay again. I keep my hay and grasses in a bag that isn't sealed at all (slightly open on the end) to ensure air circulation and no accidental molding from trapped post-freeze moisture.

OK. We went. We saw the yellow work gloves (nice!). They didn't have kiln dried pine. They didn't have brewer's yeast. We saw the freeze dried mealies. Eh. We saw the hay, but rjduve wanted Timothy hay and there wasn't any. WE BOUGHT ALFALFA PELLETS! We also saw alfalfa/timothy hay pellets and wondered about them. We bought aspen. We saw a lot of cool things. We will go again
