A^vy x Mo^br litter just born.

Post by Mrs. Beach on Thu Oct 25, 2012 10:28 pm

MBBE TMIQ (The Mouse in Question, pronounced "teMICK"), the reputed double brindle (both A^vy and Mo^br) x SLEEPY Trip (A^vy). Eleven babies born 10/23. At least five showing eumelanin brindling, one with straight whiskers, three with kinky whiskers, and one with wavy whiskers. Four just-pink ones (no eumelanin at all), one with kinky whiskers, one with wavy whiskers, and two with short, kinky whiskers (I've been told very short, kinky whiskers are often males). I am looking to the two just-pink ones, the one with wavy whiskers or the one with kinky whiskers, to possibly be double brindles. Or maybe an orange background will grow in on one of the eumelanin-brindled, kinky/wavy-whiskered ones. I culled one that appeared to be black and one that was light with black ear-tips, an obvious x-brindle male. There are some very good brindling patterns. I'll post pix when there's more to see.

You and me, both, baby! Impatiently awaiting pheomelanin on Day 6 and fur on Day 7!!!!!!

Only one of the remaining nine babies has straight whiskers! Perhaps the few with wavy whiskers will turn out not to be Mo^br (or maybe they'll be the double brindles). I keep waiting for some of the other pink ones to develop black ears so I can know they're male Mo^br and cull them, but they don't! What are the chances I got only ONE male Mo^br in this entire litter!?

Congratulations, Mrs. B, on your newest addtions to the "Brindle Empire". It must be nerve racking having to wait for that fur to grow in! One aspect of their appearance that is guaranteed, though, is that they will all be stunning.

I love what you call the mother: The Mouse in Question (TMIQ). It is definitely not your run-of-the-mill mouse moniker. (I would really enjoy seeing a thread on unconventional names such as TMIQ. I could add my Miss TreeMouse (MysteryMouse) to the list.)

Congrats again on your bubs. You can be sure I will be checking back to see pictures.

Pheomelanin is showing up today! Can't tell yet if any kinked-whiskered babies have it. Darn it! Got to wait one more day!

Ooooo, a spannard has been thrown in the works! It appears both TMIQ and Trip are Fz/fz and there are a large number of fuzzies whose pigment is going to come in much later. Also, it makes it impossible to confirm an x-brindle by kinked whiskers. Still in suspense.

Day 7:

(Sorry for the blurry pic. It's for color and whatever else you can see.)

TMIQ (pronounced "teMICK") got her name as a wee bub because she appears to be both American brindle and x-brindle, but it is very difficult to see her overlying orange stripe pattern and there was MUCH discussion about whether she really is or not. She was The Mouse in Question! Respected breeders concluded that she is!

There are tpix of TMIQ (cute) as a youngester with her American brindle brother here:

Just put you on the adoption list for a fuzzy x-brindle! I'll find a way to get her to you at RF.

BTW, everybody, Abracadabra, my red x-brindle, is finally pregnant. She will be having some large babies since her mate is a typey tricolor named Bluetrie. She just wasn't conceiving with CSB Golden Monkey, but he is so obese by now, and Abra is rather large, herself, I didn't think they were getting their important parts together. They were together for three months, and this was the second time! I've got several people on the list for red x-brindles, but if anyone would like to be added to the waiting list, just speak up. There may be future chances for red x-brindles. (Pic of Abra on this page: http://mrsbeachsbrindleempire.tripod.com/littersadoption.html).

SO KAWAII the little wrinkly stripey babies OMG.

In real talk, though, I hadn't thought about the comorbidity of fuzzy and Mobr preventing detection of Mobr, but that makes perfect sense. Crazy spanner! seems like you'll be able to tell which of the non-fuzzies are Mobr, but which of the fuzzies are Mobr is going to be made even more difficult by the texture of the fur.

Also, congrats on Abra! She's a really gorgeous mouse.

I'm thinking that fuzzy A^vy's will have orange on them and fuzzy Mo^br will have black on them. But what about the possible fuzzy double brindle? It's exciting!

Oh, yeah, and Abra is finally pregnant!

I THINK I'VE GOT A DOUBLE BRINDLE!

Here is Bub 10, the lighter of the two babies, on the upper right in every shot. She has an overlying pattern of orange stripes with a light background over her black striped pattern, just like TMIQ but much clearer and easier to see. Use CTRL + to enlarge the pix so you can really see the orange stripes.

And here is the whole litter, Day 9.

I've culled the two male fuzzies, who were smearily undermarked whatever they weres. I wonder if any of them had been double brindles if they would have lived to maturity. Too late now!

They are amazingly fat and large! Their parents aren't that big! I mean, their parents aren't as large as I'd think they'd need to be to have such large babies.

The two lightest female fuzzies have black ears. Strange! I've named the best tiger brindle, who is a boy, Tom Slick because of his racing stripes. Bub 10, the double brindle, will be Jesa, an invented feminine form of "Jesus" who was not half man and half God, according to my old boss, a pastor, but all man and all God, just as Bub 10 is all A^vy and all Mo^br.

They are such BIG, FAT babies! TMIQ goes off and just leaves them lying in the nest because they generate plenty of heat on their own!

More stripe shots of Jesa with Tom Slick for comparison. It's Day 12.

I've also noticed a really red x-brindle stripe on her nose, along with the black A^vy ones:

Aww...what cutie-pies. The markings are outstanding!

I learned something new from you, Mrs. B. In fact, you taught me two new things today. The first is the term, "Double Brindle". I am not exactly a genetic expert so reading that was quite interesting. (I can use a Punnett Square, but start getting into all of that Dilute stuff, and my head begins to spin.) Anyway, this is the first time I have heard a mouse can be a Double Brindle, so very neat.

The second, while not as fascinating as a new (new to me anyway) variety of mouse, is how to enlarge a photo by pressing the Control and + sign keys simultaneously. I never knew the computer could do that, and it is a very useful function.

It was nice to be able to see pictures of your TMIQ when she was younger. Thanks for taking the time to include them. She was, and is, beautiful.

Lovesmice (eek!) I made up the term, "double brindle"! They hauled me over a barrel for it at another forum.

Well, I like it. The AFRMA has "Unstandardized" and "Non-Recognized Colors and Markings" as well as "Unstandardized" and "Non-Recognized Colors" categories for rats and mice, respectively, that do not fit into any of the "Standardized" categories for show. Not sure, of course, what all is involved in the process, but nice to know there may be a place for unique rodents to be recognized:
