Safe, and un-safe foods

This was a list compiled on another forum, posted on another forum, edited, added to, and expanded here and there.
It lists good foods, treats to be given in moderation, and foods that you should never give.

It's very usefull, and if you have a suggestion, please post it, and we'll add it.

Fruits

- Apple (seedless)

- Cooked Ground Beef (Rinse well in hot water to remove any grease)
- Cooked Chicken or Turkey (Steamed or baked)
- Low Fat Cottage Cheese
- Fish Cod (Cooked removing bones and skin)
- Grasshoppers (Pet Shop)
- Mealworms (Pet Shop)
- Crickets (Pet Shop)
- Bread (whole grain no white bread) soaked in milk ( Low Fat, Skim, Soy)
- Eggs ( boiled or scrambled)
- Plain Tofu
- Plain Low Fat Yogurt
- Dog Biscuits (No Garlic, onion, or onion powder)
- Monkey Chow
- Lab Blocks

Other foods

- Buckwheat
- Baby Food (low sugar and no onion or garlic)
- Cheese (mild cheeses in moderation)
- Cooked Plain Brown Rice
- Cooked Pasta (Wheat or Spinach would be better)
- Dry toast (Also helpful for diarrhea)
- Flax seed
- Horse sweet feed
- Hog grower
- Low or Sugarless Cereals
- Pumpkin Seeds (unsalted)
- Nuts (No almonds)
- Sesame Seeds
- Soybeans(Roasted no salt)
- Squash seeds

- Oatmeal(dry or soaked in skim, soy or lowfat milk)
- Nutritional Yeast
- Bran and Wheat Germ (Refrigerated, goes bad quickly)

- Almonds (Contains Cyanic Acid)

- Avocado (Contains Cardiac Glycosides)

- Oranges or Tangerines(no citrus fruits)
- Cherry pits
- Peach pits & Leaves
- Apricot pits
- Lemon or Lime
- Jams and jellies
- Spices

Also, out of these foods, here are the ones that are often used in mouse food mixes.
All dry, un-cooked versions of the items

- Barley
- Brown rice
- Cheerios
- Horse sweet feed
- Lab bock
- Lentils
- Millet seed
- Puffed rice
- Pumpkin seeds
- Quick oats
- Ramen noodles
- Rolled or steam crimped oats
- Sunflower seed
- Whole grain pasta

this is a great idea! Our mice get gold fish once a week as a treat! They love it! Plus it's so funny to see them carry them around :-)

ummm...... goldfish?? Are you talking about the crackers or the real live fish?? I am assuming you mean the crackers. lol

I thought she was talking about the actual fish for a second, too, since pet stores do sell feeder goldfish. I was like "Do you put them in a the tank in a dish of water or what?" LOL.

....now I want to know how they'd react to a small dish with guppies in it.......

What's the scoop on raisins? Safe, not-safe?
Do raisins (or dates, or other sticky-sweet dried fruits) get stuck in their mouths or anything?

Raisins and other sweet dried fruits don't seem to do them any damage other than the obvious-- they're crazy amounts of sugar!

Oh my goodness I totally missed this post, crackers! Not the real fish LOL

For serious! Goldfish can carry all sorts of nasty things, from bacteria to parasites. :/ We switched our turtles from a goldfish-heavy diet to a mouse-heavy diet, since the feeders are so much cleaner.

I am curious about yogurt. I have my own yogurt colony, it is pretty cool. I have noticed commercial treats promoting yogurt. However I don't usually trust commercial pet treats. Does anyone have an opinion on yogurt for mice?

I give my mice either some milk or yogurt in their 'mash' I make, good amounts of calcium! Never had a issue feeding it either.
