Totes vs. Aquariums
Well, I've officially been bitten by the mouse bug. I currently have three of my girls in a 20L aquarium and pregnant mama with her five babies in a 10 gallon.
I've been planning for the future and deciding exactly what I want to do regarding breeding. I decided to go buy a shelf for my cages so I will be able to add more in the future.
So here's my question: I enjoy having the 20L aquarium- I like that I can observe the mice easily without bothering them. I have looked at the tote modifications that people do to turn totes into cages but I'm not entirely sure I would opt to do something like that because it doesn't seem like you can view the mice as easily as you can with an aquarium. Is there any clear advantage to using totes besides cost? Is it easier than it looks to observe the mice?

Re: Totes vs. Aquariums
Aside from the cost factor, I've found the plastic storage bins are much easier to clean (not as heavy and bulky as aquariums). Also, by modifying the sides there is better ventilation, and you can stack the bins to save space. The bins that I have used allow me to view the mice just about as good as an aquarium if not better; especially if you modify the sides of the bin in addition to the lid:
The only drawback is if any of your mice happen to be chewers. That and bedding can be kicked out of a bin with mesh/wire sides.

Thistlebrook, how large of a bin is that?
Thank you for that info- that makes sense!
