Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
I understand what your saying Stina, and I have been selecting mine for color extension for quite some time so that may be why I can tell a difference in the phenotype.
I agree that ae is recessive to a, my only disagreement was that a/ae would be identical to a/a, at least in the stock most of us are working with.
Mrs. Beach:why an ae/ae buck?

Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
Well, I am trying to breed ae/ae tris, and since Black Beauty is ae/a, I am assuming there is a good chance one of the two darkest tri bubs in ae/a. They're both does, so I'd be looking for an ae/ae buck.
Lunalady, m137b was telling me there is c^h in Black Beauty's line, and as a recessive it is hard to eliminate. It is likely the PE bub is c^h/c^h, then: a Siamese tricolor. I don't want it, so it's yours. Boy, are you lucky! And it's a doe!

Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
I just assumed it was dominant because of what I saw happen in a couple litters. I wasn't even sure it was extreme black to be honest but the litters are so obvious when they are born with jet black pigment and not even many white hairs when fur comes in. Definitely no tan hairs, the ears are black, tail black, it's actually very beautiful.

Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
That sounds like extreme black...but extreme non-agouti is most definitely not dominant to a.

LOL--that phenomenon has occurred in this house before! But not usually this far into the babies' lives.
Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
Day 9. The PE buck is the one with the most light-colored area.
I like the markings on these bubs, but my preferences are personal. I like what pleases me. Do they conform to show standards at all? Are they "good" splashed?

Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
Day 14. Lunalady, your baby boy is the lightest-colored one with the least markings. Apparently he's camera-shy!
Black Beauty has a 75% chance of being B/b. Bluetrie's genotype is unknown. Do any of these babies look c-diluted b/b?

Some of these loves look splashed brindle. I think they are darling things.

Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
They do, but they're not! I'm very fond of them! They remind me of Mrs. Beach's coloring. Hey, Stina! Any chance Bluetrie's c^e/c^ch? Black Beauty's C/c^h. There are pix of Bluetrie on the very first post of this thread. His coloring reminds me of Mrs. Beach, too. Maybe I already have c^ch!
Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
If you have pink eyed bubs, then no, he can't be c^ch/c^e. He doesn't look like a c^ch/* dilute to me...the diluted color looks too light

Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
Yeah, funny thing about that apparently PE bub. Now that eyes are open, I'd say his eyes are black! Thanks for the rest of your opinion. That does make sense to me. Oh, well! Do you think Bluetri might be c^e/c^e?
Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
As light as its eyes were, they are probably ruby. An odd eye I had in a recent litter, when her eyes opened one looked pink, and one BLACK...the black became ruby as her eyes opened more.
He could be c^e/c^h...if that bub turns out ruby eyed that could explain it.

Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
Stina, I will look deeply into his eyes this morning! Lunalady, want to give a name to the PE bub? It would make it easier to talk about him.
Re: Black Beauty's unusual litter
Day 16.
PE bub is second from right.
Do you know how hard it is to peer into the eyes of a baby mouse who's only had his eyes open a few days? You want to look at them in a good light, and the stronger the light is, the more he squints. They look black is all I can say. I even looked at them through my 10x loupe. Perhaps when he's older it will be easier to get a good look.
