Fuzzy Babies From RF Pairing
I have babies!!! My Doe is a cream with pink eyes, Buck is a Black with some white. She had 14 babies on Tuesday. I culled (yuck) a few on Wednesday then the last culling was today. I kept 6. Two of which are black with white. I am very happy.

Six still sounds like a lot for one doe (wow, down from 14!) but if she's handling it good for her I had six nursing (three boys and three girls) but ended up culling two more bucks because the girls were looking so thin. It really makes such a huge difference- the girls are catching up now!
Re: Fuzzy Babies From RF Pairing
6 is fine for a doe as long as the doe is healthy and the babies are getting enough milk. I would not worry. Remember that every doe is different. Lol
Congrats on the new litter ! Can't wait to see pics!
14 is a lot for a litter. I had one line of mice that generation after generation had 21 pups every time!! This was before I culled (I was once against it, but had an open mind ). Lol the does did just fine. Now- I would never let a doe keep that many now! I cull to 4 or 6, sometimes less depending.

I am keeping an eye on things. If I feel 6 is a problems with her, I will cull again. But with 8 all babies were fine. I just felt 6 would be even better. I will keep all posted.

Re: Fuzzy Babies From RF Pairing
Update, The 6 babies are big huge chunky monkeys. They are sooo fat. I am very happy how mom is with the babies. I have no idea how many girls, boys. I got 2 that look like dad and it did not matter to me if they were girls or boys. Mom is a very big mouse with giant ears. Dad is small with good ear size. His colors are great. I may have some for adoption. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Awww....no pics?!
BTW, I'm not sure if anyone has told you this yet, but I would suggest a 30-day quarantine for new mice. It's best not to breed them until after QT is over, just in case they have something. It's really hard on new moms to be sick and have to deal with raising babies as well. :/
I made the same mistake when I got my first mice from a breeder and I'm sure others here have done the same thing as well. Thankfully, we have an awesome online mouse community full of people who are ready and willing to help guide us newbies and let us know when we mess up!

Re: Fuzzy Babies From RF Pairing
Some folks look at QT the other way: that the mice might die due to NSS (new shed syndrome) no matter what you do, so you might as well try to get some babies out of them as soon as you can. This is part of the advice given about imported mice, since NSS is so much more of a threat.

Re: Fuzzy Babies From RF Pairing
I here ya there Maggie! That's one of the reasons I broke QT with my Red buck. He's up in our room on a completely different floor from my other mice, so they're still on QT from HIM, but I ended up breaking down and putting a couple girls with him because I have had such awful luck with my mice these past few months was freaking out at the idea of losing him and not having a single beautiful baby to carry on his line!
However, when I get mice from other breeders here in the US I always try and do a full QT now to ensure that there's nothing wrong with them and that nothing is floating around in my mousery that might get them sick as well. I can't deny that I've broken the golden rule a couple times in the past, lol, but I do TRY to stick to it.

Re: Fuzzy Babies From RF Pairing
I did the same thing Lunalady did- bred immediately after RF. We broke QT all the way home as it was (and the RF mice were the only mice I had at the time, aside from two that I did not put with them for over a month).
Since Julee and I managed to pick up 40 mice at Rodentfest, the number of cages we had didn't fit the number of mice we got from the number of people that we got them from perfectly, so we ended up splitting the cages and putting does together, bucks separate, etc. I haven't had any issues other than the one head tilt girl (who still has head tilt, BTW ).
The first two pairs I put together were from the same breeder though.
I definitely agree that it's a good idea to stick to quarantine, especially with pet store and mice from unknown origins. I would much rather treat a doe and then have her nurse a litter than have her nurse while she's sick. I just don't practice what I preach

Re: Fuzzy Babies From RF Pairing
I stick to quarantine but only per event, or pickup. No matter where the mice have come from, if they have to go home in the same car they may as well be QT'ed together.
Yay Lunalady! I am very excited for you!

Re: Fuzzy Babies From RF Pairing
Lol- my UK girls are on strict QT, but I may bring one buck to them next week. Unsure still. My RF mice were exposed to my few current mice when I brought them to RF for the show. So all have been QTed together, with the exception of one who stayed home during RF. I made my first pairing just two days ago. Lol
Robin- I would take one but I don't think they would be ready by the time I come your way next month. Lol when were they born?

Christine as of today, the babies are 2 weeks old. They will be close to 4 weeks when you come. Maybe, just maybe it will work.

Oh, crud. Sometimes this just happens. If you want to cull down to two or three, or a manable number of bucks, that is ok and mom will not suffer.
