How to produce red mice?
I'm not familiar with genetics much, I know the basics. We have recessive yellows, some are broken some are brindles. Is there a way to make reds with them some how?
Re: How to produce red mice?
I do not believe Red can be reproduced, BUT I am unsure. So.... I will just leave this question to the more genetics inclined members.

You can make 'reds' with brindle. If you have seen my mice in the for sale section 'available for rodent fest' my reds are all Avy brindles.
But the gene that is most often called red is dominant red or lethal yellow (both the same gene, Ay) which is dominant and cannot be created unless you have the gene already.

You can produce red "recessive yellows" by breeding the darkest animals to eachother..it would just take FOREVER without the addition of modifiers from Ay reds that have been bred for a very very long time to have good red coloration. There ARE recessive reds (e/e) produced from crossing in mice from dominant red (Ay) lines...but they are extremely rare.

Stain is correct.
Roland has great examples of what can be done to darken e/e (recessive yellow) mice. He crossed his with 'golden agouti' mice, which are agouti mice with a high dose of red pigment.
Here is his website, you can look in the 'recessive yellow' section for his photos of his progress.

Re: How to produce red mice?
Here are a couple pics of recessive red (e/e) self and x-brindle mice I've produced. They need a great deal of improvement...but they are much darker than your standard e/e...

e/e really makes for an awesome x-brindle. I don't think any of the other colours are quite as stunning.
