Swollen Legs
One of the bucks I brought from Rodentfest is looking really weird tonight. He has all four legs and feet swollen up and is walking really weirdly. He doesn't appear to have any wounds, is well hydrated and fed.
Does anyone know what this might be? I will euthanize him if it persists much more than a couple of days, it looks painful. I've never seen it before and I'm curious about it.

Re: Swollen Legs
Oh wow...........
I have no clue what it could be. I do know in cats swollen paw pads can mean lung cancer. I am not saying he has lung cancer though! lol Maybe it is just a contact allergy due to something in his cage or maybe a cleaner used to clean his cage? Maybe it is water retension for some weird reason?
Lots of maybe.... so sorry I can't be of more help

Re: Swollen Legs
Unfortunetly I've lost my camera charger in the move and I can't get the darn thing to stay charged.
His cage is the same as it was last week and it hasn't been changed in a week (about time) They are just big, fat, swollen, purple feet. I saw a spider in their tonight too, unsure if he could have gotten bitten but he appears to not have injuries.
It's so weird.

Re: Swollen Legs
Purple..... oh boy. Poor baby.
It could definately be an allergic reaction to a spider bite. I am concerned about the purple color though. That means he may not be getting enough blood supply to his feet and legs due to the swelling. Too bad benadryl did not come in small enough doses for mice.
Oh, and sorry about you losing your charger to your canera. Moves can stink in that aspect.

I have lost so many important items..sigh...
I am going to check on him tomorrow and if he's not better...he is going to be put out of the misery of this.

Re: Swollen Legs
The splashed is still just as swollen. His back legs are the ones that appear to be purple. He also acts very jumpy and frantic.
He has a small wound on his front paw but it doesn't appear to be a spider bite.
What I have right now is Baytril, would that help any? If this is serious, as I said, I'd euthanize him even though he's just so pretty. Could he have something like arthritis or lupus?

Re: Swollen Legs
In a person this would indicate bad circulation to the extremities. It is technically termed "cyanosis". The red, oxygenated blood travels from the heart to the extremities, there is poor circulation, it can't get back to the heart, the oxygen is used up and the blood's color begins to change to blue (the color of blood returning to the heart minus oxygen). (My dad had this.)
Re: Swollen Legs
Is this something that happens often in mice? Does he need a wheel or a big cage to run around in? is it a genetic or reoccuring problem?

Re: Swollen Legs
I had a doe recently who had one paw that might fit your description. I have spider issues, so I chalked it off to another spider attack at first. It was just one paw, though the foot and part of the "ankle" eventually turned blue. It didn't start until she was noticeably pregnant with her second litter though. At around 3 weeks of age, I lost 2 of the baby does mysteriously and I had to euthanize a young buck at 4 weeks for what appeared to be a sudden failure to thrive. I don't know what it was. The doe seems perfectly fine except part of her foot is still discolored and a little swollen. I have the remaining 4 youngin's on close observation, but have found no issues thus far. I don't know if a spider bite would cause issues for unborn babies, or if something funky is going on here. I have spiders though..... But that was my first experience with foot/paw swelling.

Re: Swollen Legs
Thanks Gyp! This is so weird, it's all the feet. Unless this guy is suffering through his entire body, which would be so terrible.
I bet a spider bite would cause problems with babies...or at least tax the mother's system so that she can't raise them correctly.

Gee, That is too bad. Poor little guy. Spider bite sounds like the culprit.

Re: Swollen Legs
I have not euthanized him-one front paw appears to have gone down to almost normal size. I am hoping to see some further improvements today.
If a wild mouse came and bit one of his toes, could this cause swelling? I did not find evidence of wild mice in my new home but last night I saw some suspiciously small poos around his bin. I know when a mouse bites me sometimes my whole hand swells up. It's borderline allergy thing.

Re: Swollen Legs
Sadly, after long deliberation I did decide to put this guy to sleep. His back feet were even more swollen then I thought possible this morning, and he had giant lymph nodes under his chin.. I'm very upset and weirded out over it. None of the other mice are remotely under top condition so something immuno-compromising must have been going on with this guy.
