and see - tinyhart sees broken brindle! hmmmm..... could be.....

sometimes you need another pair of eyes and a different computer screen. I guess its all just a waiting game. lol

I also think bub 3 appears broken brindle.

I am encouraged to hear SOMEone thinking there could be brindle color there because:

so if you are thinking you see broken brindle, you've gotta be seeing brindle tricolor! (Bub 2 would be the c^e/c bub.)

Today I am seeing the dark smudges on their faces developing into a barely slightly warmer color than the dark smudges on their behinds. Their behind colors definitely look beige and are evenly beige. The face colors are, well, some dark hairs and some less dark hairs, which I guess would describe brindle--but they're not orangey! Possibly tinted a bit orange. Hipsebah's orange was really orange, as were the other brindles in her line. Funny! And also weird because Hipsebah's line is usually undermarked brindles, and there are darker hairs mixed in. That would be great, so I wouldn't have to breed in stripes!

But at least it seems I have a chance at brindle tri with all but Bub 4, whose face color looks pretty even. Wow!

Waitaminnit! Bub 1 couldn't be brindle tri. She has a black spot! So it's up to Bubs 2 and 3--or both! And they are opposite genders (crossing fingers)!

Oh, crumb! I labelled them backwards in the first photo. Bub 1 is the one with the black by her eye. So it's Bub 1 on the right and Bub 4 on the left.

Bub 4's nickname is Butt Spot.
I'm sure they will be teased mercilessly at school!

So it looks like either Ivory or Head Smudge will be brindle tris...maybe...I hope!

Ann, brindle tris can have solid black spots. Think about how Roland wants to breed calico using brindles.

Shit! Those three bubs are agouti! Mr. S. D. is probably A/a! I described hairs dark at the ends. So what does an agouti brindle look like?

I don't understand what you're saying here. Splash consists of base and dilute colour. If your base is multiple colours (brindle) then you will have base (orange / black) and dilutes of those colours (which are dependent upon the type of dilution). If it's also pied, you will have white.

c^e--extreme dilute--removes all yellow (the melaninwhatever starting with ph), c^e-diluted A^vy turns beige with black stripes, like Mrs. Beach in my avatar. The undiluted color is A^vy orange.

Was thinking A-locus. If Hip is A^vy/a and Mr. S. D. is A/a, then I should have one a/a bub, one A/a bub, one A^vy/a bub, and one A/A^vy bub. Hmmmm. This should be interesting!

It's very possible that all those are A-vy...the spots are just too small to tell!

I just got out my 10x magnifier and brushed the little hairs of their little spots backwards. Ivory and Head Smudge are the agoutis. Eye Spot is a/a. Out of Ivory, Head Smudge, and Butt Spot, two of them are A^vy. I'm hoping Butt Spot is because he'd be A^vy/a. I don't want A.

Does this mean that Butt Spot is automatically, guaranteed, by default A^vy/a? I think it does!

Gypsy, one of these bubs--I forget which--has Queen Victoria's nose! (Hey, I may not need Eye Spot, the one you like, for my breeding program, depending on how the others turn out. Would you like to have her?)

Ann to the best of my knowledge, Avy will always be expressed over A....so it will be listed Avy/A. So, that baby will not be agouti unless it's A/a or A/A.

To throw a wrench into the gears, I've had brindles that were so overmarked they were phenotypically agoutis, but geneotypically Brindle.

Thanks for the A-locus correction, tinyhart. I had mistakenly thought that since A was a base color, it would go first.

OK, Ivory and Head Smudge both have hairs on their face spots that are dark from a third out, but white or light from the root to one third the length of the hairs. That sounds agouti to me. Ticked. C-diluted ticked. c^e/c^e removes the yellow and leaves the black. That is what I am seeing. There are also beige spots on these mice. Waitaminnit! How could that be? How could their beige (diluted) spots be beige and then they have c-diluted agouti spots, too?

Ivory is definitely A^vy! The light blush on her nose and lower face is turning a bit orange (c^e/c-diluted A^vy) with black stripes!!!!!!!

Tinyhart, Ivory is the one you said earlier looked like a broken brindle. Do you still think she's brindle?

Sorry the pix aren't that definitive. The color and stripes were very clear this morning. This evening the light was different.

BTW, this is Day 12 and their eyes are opening! They will officially be 12 days old at 2:00 a.m. Isn't this remarkably early? They are remarkably large babies. Has anyone else ever seen this happen? I thought eyes opened on Day 14.

I must say they are huge bubs. Theirs noses are so blunt, compared to my pet mouse's bubs. They are beautiful.
