Umbrous Agouti?
Is this little girl an Umbrous Agouti or a standard Agouti? Her mom is Agouti(from Agouti X Black) and dad is Recessive Yellow(from Pied Black Merle X Black). She is from a litter of 3 and her 2 other sisters are Extreme Blacks.
(this is a cruddy pic, but it shows her coloring pretty well)
Her type needs alot of work, but I just over coloring!

Re: Umbrous Agouti?
Hard to tell. She looks like she could be but two of tje pics ate throwing me off. That and her linage. Anyone else have any thoughts?
I do know the umbrous gene itself is not common at all. It origionates overseas.

Re: Umbrous Agouti?
I think she might be umbrous. There are lines from beth and thus melissa behind him right? If so, umbrous is entirely possible.

Re: Umbrous Agouti?
I'll have to set up my lightbox to get better pics tomorrow.
Here's her pedigree: http://www.mouserydatabase.com/mousery.cfm?mousery=902&mouse=22323&view=pedigree
The mice in the pedigrees are mostly from Beth and Melissa's lines. The mom is from a cross of a mouse from Beth and a mouse from my pet store line.
I've gotten Umbrous Agouti and Umbrous Argente from another pairing before. It was a cross of my pet store line and a Blue Splash Rex buck from Melissa.
Here's the pedigree on those babies: http://www.mouserydatabase.com/mousery.cfm?mousery=902&mouse=21093&view=pedigree
My pet store line has popped out alot of surprises, so I wouldn't be all that surprised if that's where the Umbrous is coming from.

Re: Umbrous Agouti?
Is umbrous a desirable trait in mice? Here it is a bit common, we try to breed it out because it makes bad agouti's
Re: Umbrous Agouti?
I would vote umbrous too and it probably did come from the pet store line. I haven't had any umbrous so far but maybe it's hiding in the blacks. Umbrous is dominant isn't it? I've been lazy about looking things up lately, lol.

Re: Umbrous Agouti?
I have to check the peds a bit later. Right now I am running out the door. Lol. I actually had umbrous come from UK and Germany mice years ago. I did pass on mice that were umbrous to other breeders, including Melissa and Jack.
Umbrous makes agouti darker. I love the gene!
EDIT: I can't view the peds on my moms computer. Sigh.... I REALLY need my computer up and running. Her computer is just too "overworked". lol BUT - I was able to see the pictures a bit better and I think your baby definately looks umbrous. Is he related to the umbrous argente I recieved from you?
Also...... anyone who recieved any decendants to my Tans, Agouti, or cinnamon lines have the umbrous gene in some of their mice. lol

Dino- beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. To some Umbrous is desirable while to others it is considered an annoyance.
Beth- I have no idea if it's dominant or not. I don't believe so though. I didn't get any Umbrous babies when I bred my Umbrous girls to a show-type boy who wasn't related to my pet store line. If it was dominant I should have gotten some Umbrous babies, unless it was just purely bad luck???
This next time around I'll be breeding the girls a boy from Melissa's line. He's related to their dad.
Kawmice- She's your boys cousin. They're first cousins once removed, to be exact, lol. Here's the pedigree on your boy: http://www.mouserydatabase.com/mousery.cfm?mousery=902&mouse=21093&view=pedigree
If you can't view it on the computer wait for it to load the top bar with the buttons and click "Mouse". That'll bring you to the mouse's main page where you can then click "View Pedigree" and it should load properly. My computer is stupid too and I have to play around with it to get it to show the pedigrees sometimes.
I, too, love the look of Umbrous Agouti. Mostly with this girl I love her dark whisker bed. I don't know why...it just looks so neat and pretty in person to have such a pretty Agouti body and then the dark whisker bed.

Re: Umbrous Agouti?
Umbrous IS dominant (technically co or incompletely dominant), but only visible on agouti. It has the strongest effect when the genotype is Aa UU (heterozygous agouti, homozygous umbrous). It is not visible on a/a animals. AA Uu animals would be umbrous, but have the least noticeable affect from the umbrous gene. Aa Uu would be a little less effected than Aa UU and AA UU would have an effect between that of AaUu and AAUu.
Here's an article about it http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=9&ved=0CG8QFjAI&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ias.ac.in%2Fjarch%2Fjgenet%2F40%2F229.pdf&ei=3wm3T4D5HaXw6AH86uDCCg&usg=AFQjCNGW9EqyGHK9ce_9xiEFCPFe-8vocw&sig2=BmKIui97uGFmx7ilhAEdpQ
